What "self-identified Catholics" think about the teaching of the Church is not really very useful to know.

It is useful to know insofar as to determine how effective or ineffective those who charged with imparting the teaching of the Church have been.

I suppose, but that's not what the "journalists" are arguing.

And this was a poll of Americans. Catholics aren't even a majority in the U.S.

Where are the polls of African Catholics? Or of Filipinos?

Catholic opinion does not seem much different that American opinion as a whole. Catholics have regressed to the mean. That is what tends to happen in a culture as open and democratic and seductive as the American culture. That's my take.
