I preface this by saying I am no longer a Catholic, though I was raised in that faith.
I personally hope to see a new pope willing to crack down on the American and other bishops that are not following the dictates of the church. A recent example. A bishop in Florida came out against the church's stand in the Terri Shiavo case. This is just wrong. One of the main appeals of the pope to youth was his consistent faith. He said what he believed and he lived it.

He did not particularly distinguish himself in promoting the Church's stance, but he was a signatory to the Florida bishops letter which condemned the starvation of Terri Schiavo.
