I honestly believe in his heart he was a Servant of God first and a Roman Catholic second.

In his heart he believed that being a true Roman Catholic meant being a true servant of God.

He would not have made such an artificial distinction.

I don't disagree with you at all. The point I was trying to make is that he didn't look down on people of other religions if they, too, were Servants of God -- whether or not they were Roman Catholic. He respected others, and in doing so, earned the respect of others.
