Terri Schiavo's widower has gone into hiding because of the furore over his wife's death and has sought police protection.
Michael Schiavo, 41, is under guard three days after his disabled wife died from dehydration at a Florida hospice.
She had spent 13 days without food or water after a United States judge upheld Mr Schiavo's claim that she would not have wished to continue life in a persistently vegetative state.
"His goal is to find safe housing because of these death threats," said a friend, Alan Shoopak. "It's not over. Unfortunately, it's just beginning."
Mrs Schiavo's parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, who went to the US Supreme Court to block the removal of their daughter's feeding tube, admit that they care little for their son-in-law, but have urged against revenge attacks.
"Our family abhors any violence, or any threats of violence. We ask that all those who support our family be completely kind in their words and deeds towards others," said Mrs Schiavo's sister, Suzanne Vitadamo.
Anger at Mr Schiavo's actions has been fuelled by the revelation that a court order from a county judge, George Greer, who repeatedly refused the Schindlers' pleas to let their daughter live, will allow him to have her cremated and her ashes interred in Pennsylvania. The Schindlers' request for a share of the ashes or even a lock of their daughter's hair has also been refused.
The family see it as the final act in a 12-year campaign of spite by their son-in-law. Other alleged snubs include having his wife's wedding ring melted down to make a ring for himself.
Last week, while his wife's life ebbed away at the Woodside Hospice in Pinellas Park, Florida, Mr Schiavo moved into quarters on site, to avoid protesters outside. Some had banners expressing vitriol for Mr Schiavo and Judge Greer. "You are going to hell, murderers," one read. The hospice also received hoax bomb threats last week.
For several days, Mr Schiavo has not returned to the home in Clearwater he shares with his fiancée, Jodi Centonze, and their two children. Friends speculate that they may leave Florida altogether.
The results of a post-mortem examination, which it is believed may shed more light on years-old bone fractures Mrs Schiavo suffered, and the extent of her brain damage, will be published within weeks.
Mr Schiavo's friends and family speak of a man who honoured his wife's wishes and released her from what he perceived to be a life without hope. After cradling her in his arms as she died on Thursday morning, he placed a rose in her hand and kissed her goodbye.
A Mass to celebrate her life will be held on Tuesday.
For the millionth time: there was NO clear and convincing evidence of Terri's wishes. MS only "remembered" that she "didn't want to live like that" seven years after she collapsed, and AFTER he collected over a million dollars for her care for the rest of her life, based on her 50 years life expectancy at the time.
MS, his brother, and brother's wife claimed Terri made some off hand remarks -- first of all off had remarks, even if she did make them, can't be sufficient to put someone do death, and we only have the word of some very biased witnesses. Terri's family and long time friends testified to just the opposite.
Perpetual Paranoia??????????????????????????????
"Who can it be knocking at my door?
Go 'way, don't come 'round here no more.
Can't you see that it's late at night?
I'm very tired, and I'm not feeling right.
All I wish is to be alone;
Stay away, don't you invade my home.
Best off if you hang outside,
Don't come in - I'll only run and hide.
CHORUS:
Who can it be now?
Who can it be now?
Who can it be now?
Who can it be now?
Who can it be knocking at my door?
Make no sound, tip-toe across the floor.
If he hears, he'll knock all day,
I'll be trapped, and here I'll have to stay.
I've done no harm, I keep to myself;
There's nothing wrong with my state of mental health.
I like it here with my childhood friend;
Here they come, those feelings again!
CHORUS
If he wanted so badly to abide by his wife's wishes (not that I believe for a minute that a young healthy girl ever stated anything like that), then he should have done so right after her diagnosis, and not have waited 7 years.
With our tax money.
I fear the problem is that they have no fear of a higher authority. It would explain their actions towards Terri.
He wasn't going to make the same mistakes as Scott Peterson made in looking like he didn't give a damn. Oh no, he was going to play his part of the mournful husband to the hilt despite all evidence to the contrary. Starved his wife and tried to look like a saint while doing so. What an act.
Revenge is a dish best served cold....If I was in his shoes, I would be looking over my shoulder for the rest of my life.
Somehow I think MS is going to face the bar of justice or be sued into poverty {I will contribute} or end up in jail for assaulting Jodi. The pressure will be unbearable for this dead beat.
Can't say that I blame you on that.
actually, I red that Judge Greer denied a request from a woman for a restraining order nnd the judge denied the request. The guy killed her
No one I know would wish him harm. Many pray for him. Why is it automatically assumed these threats are from pro life people. Yeah, there may be a few on the fring as in any group but I don't think he need fear bodily harm from people that wanted Terri to live. We all are responsible for our actions but all life worthy , including his.
Michael Schiavo will never find peace the rest of his life.
] I feel sorry for him and Judge Greer in the same way that I felt sorry for Jeffry Dahmer. The only difference was that Dahmer was insane. Greer, Felos and Schiavo are simply evil.
Exactly. I think Michael has been abusing her all along--mentally, if not physically. The time for her to get out is now, before he has the big let-down over not being able to abuse his wife and her relatives any longer.
Can anybody see how badly they spellchecked this article? It's very obvious - here's how it should have been spelled:
Terri Schiavo's murderer has gone into hiding because of the furore over his wife's death and has sought police protection.
Forgive me Lord.
I wonder if he trimmed the thorns off the rose, or rather wrapped her fingers around the thorny stem and squeezed. The later seems to be more characteristic of his reported behavior.
I'm rather shocked by his refusal to allow the parents a lock of her hair,...that telegraphs far more of his thinking than many other actions.
I wish MS no harm, I wish him no good. It's between him & God now. . I wish nothing for him.
