Vigil masses on Saturday after sunset satisfy the Sunday obligation for the same reason that masses after sunset on Sunday satisfy the Sunday obligation: Because the Church says so.

And our custom is to attend Saturday evening Mass as we did tonight. The second reading for tomorrow (that we heard tonight) is from the First letter of St. Peter.
