It was here that the pope developed his oft-repeated chestnut that the only acceptable act of sex is one intended for the creation of a child.

Clearly, this author has not read the book at all.

"You sin, you make confession, you say penance"

You repent and change your ways. If you can't change then ask God to give you the grace to change.

Is today April 1?

I don't think the Pope will die on April Fool's Day. I think his recorded date of death will be April 2.

Jim has always "disallowed" religious brawl threads. It's best to just ignore people when they ask such questions during this time.

Is today April 1?

In about 2 hours, it won't be at the Vatican.

Roman Catholic Church A state in which the souls of those who have died in grace must expiate their sins.
A place or condition of suffering, expiation, or remorse: a purgatory of drug abuse.

There is no mediator but Christ Jesus. Your prayers are heard by God through Christ, not Mary.

Oh, so you've never had friends or family pray for you?

actually, I think there are some very serious inquiries. Mine for instance. I remember when JFK was Pres and my older sister just loved Jackie. She did everything Jackie did. My sister was in high school. She ended up marrying a Catholic and took classes to become one herself. Then he stopped going and so did my sister. I've always had questions about your faith. I've always looked from afar and admired Catholics. We just want to understand that's all. True, this is probably not the time for it.

I had a best friend who was Catholic but I was too young to care about the differences then. Now that I'm getting older, I want to learn more.

But it is times such as these that inspire these kinds of questions is it not?

Do Catholics believe that once saved always saved?

The short answer is no.

As simply as I can say it, Church teaching is your soul must be in a state sanctifying of grace (God's own supernatural life) at the point of death to go to heaven. Like you need an oxygen mask to breath under water, you need sanctifying grace to exist in heave. The first time you receive this grace is at baptism, which removes original sin (and any personal sin if you are past the age of reason).

You can lose this sanctifying grace through grave sin, (mortal sin.) Through the sacrament of confession sanctifying grace can be restored by having your sins absolved.

If you die in a state of mortal sin, there is no "second chance" you will not go to heaven.

Kerry can call himself whatever he likes, but he commits grave serious sin by supporting abortion. Although he calls himself Catholic, and is Catholic in that he was baptized as such, he can be a Catholic in a state of mortal sin or a Catholic in a state of grace, just like any Catholic. If he dies in a state of mortal sin, he will not attain heaven.

Someone mentioned earlier that the 117 Cardinals have been called to Rome. Can anyone verify this?

There are certain people who like to start arguments. Once the discussion takes place, they will arrive in droves.

Pope Clings to Life As His Health Worsens

AP) - Pope John Paul II was clinging to life Friday as his condition deteriorated further, and the Vatican said his breathing was shallow and his kidneys were failing after complications from a urinary tract infection.

"This evening or this night, Christ opens the door to the pope," Angelo Comastri, the pope's vicar general for Vatican City, told the crowd.

Earlier, the Vatican said John Paul's general condition has "further worsened."

He said the pope's "breathing has become shallow" and his overall health had become "compromised."

"The shallow breathing is totally consistent with severe failure of the blood vessels to provide blood to all the key organs," said Dr. Peter Salgo, associate director of the intensive care unit at New York Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center. "Eventually you run out of reserve."
