And bureaucrats looking for a new empire of funding and control.

The most important means of communication in our lifetime, and potentially the most pervasive. Many government fear the internet - I can't think of any other word that is appropriate. Governments such as China's, have went to extraodinary lengths to regulate what their citizens can access on the internet, as do the Saudis, Cubans, etc. It would be much easier if they could "nip it in the bud" and prevent the information and communication from ever getting out there in the first place.

Unfortunately, more than a few politicians in this country would help them (from both parties, no less).

That's why the interviewee sheds lots of crocodile tears about ICANN.

The Achilles' heel of the internet is control of the domain registration system and subsequent control of the name to IP resolution.

And I would not trust that system to be managed anywhere outside of the US.
