It is a legitimate desire to be safe from violence. (Life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness are difficult to have if one's bleeding out from a Bad Guy or irresponsible yahoo-induced GSW.) Some people believe that can be achieved by banning firearms. That won't work, but that doesn't change the fact that the base desire is valid.

Browbeating, yelling, saying "neener neener the Second Amendment (WWJMBD?)", won't really help to win people over; indeed, it will reinforce the mass-media driven stereotype of the firearms or self-defense enthusiast, and they'll redouble their conviction that those guns need to be banned. One catches a heck of a lot more flies with honey than vinegar.

Stupidity is trying the same thing over and over, and expecting a different result every time.
