PINELLAS PARK, Fla. (AP) — As the holiest weekend of the Christian calendar ended and hopes for an Easter miracle faded, Terri Schiavo received the sacrament of communion on Sunday from a priest who glumly said the brain-damaged woman’s “death is imminent.”

Meanwhile, Terri Schiavo’s parents and siblings disputed their own lawyer’s assertion that the brain-damaged woman “has passed the point of no return.”

A tiny droplet of communion wine was placed on Schiavo’s tongue as her brother, sister and brother-in-law looked on quietly. The Rev. Thaddeus Malanowski said he held Terri’s right hand, as he and hospice priest Rev. Joseph Braun administered the sacrament to the woman who entered a 10th day without food or water.

Malanowski said Schiavo did not visibly react to the wine, as she had when receiving previous sacraments.

“She received the blood of Christ,” said Malanowski, adding that he could not give her a fleck of host because her tongue was dry. Still, his announcement drew applause and cheers from the crowd, which spent most of the day heckling police and protesting loudly.
