Bush decries border project

WACO, Texas -- President Bush yesterday said he opposes a civilian project to monitor illegal aliens crossing the border, characterizing them as "vigilantes." He said he would pressure Congress to further loosen immigration law. More than 1,000 people -- including 30 pilots and their private planes -- have volunteered for the Minuteman Project, beginning next month along the Arizona-Mexico border. Civilians will monitor the movement of illegal aliens for the month of April and report them to the Border Patrol. Mr. Bush said after yesterday's continental summit, with Mexican President Vicente Fox and Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin at Baylor University, that he finds such actions unacceptable. "I'm against vigilantes in the United States of America," Mr. Bush said at a joint press conference. "I'm for enforcing the law in a rational way." The Minuteman Project was born out of a long-held perception among many residents that more Border Patrol agents are needed to handle the flow of illegal immigrants. Mr. Bush was criticized by both Republicans and Democrats earlier this month for failing to add 2,000 agents to the Border Patrol, as set out in the intelligence overhaul legislation he signed in December. The president's 2006 budget allows enough money to add only 210 agents for the U.S. borders with Canada and Mexico. Mr. Bush said he will "continue to push for reasonable, common-sense immigration policy." He has proposed legislation to grant guest-worker status to millions of illegal aliens already in the United States. The legislation has attracted scant support in Congress, where it is widely regarded as another amnesty that will encourage even more illegal immigration.

I just don't know....I see some of what you're saying, but it seems too far fetched. How can Bush NOT see the current crisis and just be looking forward? Talking about a backlash from prop 87 (but wasn't CA strongly democratic even before then?), I think there will be a huge backlash because of the lack of enforcing the border laws. I've been mad about this for decades, but this is the first time my sentiments have been echoed by talk radio hosts, some politicians, and many, many irate people. More and more are with us every day.

Instead of calling them vigilantes, I prefer to call them undocumented border control agents.

Too bad, Mr. President, but you're just plain wrong. You have a nation to protect - not a global economic bloc. He has no business allowing foreign people to come live work and take over any part of this nation. I don't care where they come from. Look at the polls Mr. Bush! 85%+ want these people gone.

I have grown tired of Mr. Fox.

Have you grown tired of George Bush?

Bush is on the wrong side of this debate.

What these Americans are doing is simply OBSERVING the migration of illegals over a one month period to then inform our government of what they saw. No one will be armed

Actually the Minuteman project is neutral on the issue of the participants carrying arms for self-defense purposes. Carry laws of Arizona will apply. No weapons will be permitted in National Parks in the area. I read on an related site that long arms will not be allowed by the Minuteman Project but I have yet to see that on the official site.

Seeing as how a high-ranking member of the violent Salvadorian gang Mira Salvatruchas, a gang responsible for most of the drug trafficking and violence along the border and within both the US and Mexico, has issued an order to "teach the Minutemen vigilantes a lesson they will never forget." If I participate as planned I won't be caught unprepared to defend myself...

I think that for the credibility of the protest, because that is what the Minuteman Project is about, the participants should be upstanding citizens and respected members of the community. As many retired police officers and military personnel are now amongst their ranks this already appears to be the case.

While the liberals brand them vigilantes and thugs (and just barely stop short of calling them terrorists), let's call them what they really are - Patriots.

I have a feeling quite a few of us have donated money to them. If you are an attorney, they could use those services as much, or more.

Great quote at the top of their page:

"If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest for freedom, go home and leave us in peace. We seek not your council nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen."

I think some of the flamier comments got sent to the great bit bucket in the sky. I just glad the whole thread wasn't permanently axed. Thanks Mods and JR.

Congratulations - you have the support of millions.
Unfortunately, we're all on the border no matter where
we are. LaRaza and various immigration lobby groups are
talking about the "reconquista" - reversing the results
of the Mexican War and reclaiming that territory. And
right now they're succeeding thanks to Bush and a political
establishment that has already surrendered. It's up to
all patriotic Americans, like you,to say ENOUGH!

Yep, it's a good sign. Any rational person studying the comments on this thread would say "WOW! These people are ANGRY!" To fall for the flame war incitement of the 1% who are race baiters would be stupid. That trick has worked on FR in the past, to the detriment of honest discussion. This subject is too damn serious to allow a few jerks to get these threads pulled with their worn out tricks.

I had just written a post to Czar and CJ, asking for peace and love and harmony and a group hug, and just generally trying to be an ambassador of good will, etc., when the thread got nuked. I hit post and got the light blue screen of doom.

We have to be quick(er) to warn people not to take the bait. I still snipe the occasional post. I did on this thread to COEXERJ145 early on in the thread. That's OK, I suppose ... I think the mods nuke the threads when it turns into a running gun battle as happened after post 400.

I try to remind folks that the goal of the flame war inciters and race baiters is simply to get uncomfortable (for the OBL) threads nuked to oblivion.
