Judge admits mistake, refuses to reverse findings on Terri Schiavo

Clearwater, Florida - Judge George Greer admits there was an error in fact in the 2000 trial that established Terri Schiavo;s "right to die."

When a family friend claimed a 19-year-old Terri was upset that right to die icon Karen Ann Quinlan's parents removed her from life support, the Judge discounted the testimony, reportedly because the Judge said Quinlan died in 1976.

Quinlan was taken off life support in 1976, but died in 1985. A technical error, yes. But Wednesday afternoon, Judge Greer ruled it was not enough to affect the outcome of the 2000 lawsuit that held Terri would not want to be kept alive with severe brain damage.

Dr. Cranford seems to have a knack for finding PVS. Cranford also diagnosed Robert Wendland as PVS. He did so in spite of the fact that Wendland could pick up specifically colored pegs or blocks and hand them to a therapy assistant on request. He did so in spite of the fact that Wendland could operate and maneuver an ordinary wheelchair with his left hand and foot, and an electric wheelchair with a joystick, of the kind that many disabled persons (most famously Dr. Stephen Hawking) use. Dr. Cranford dismissed these abilities as meaningless. Fortunately for Wendland, the California supreme court was not persuaded by Cranford's assessment.

Robert Wendland should die so that his family can "be allowed to live their lives," Dr. Ronald Cranford, a Minnesota neurologist and bioethicist, testified recently in the Stockton courtroom of Superior Court Judge Bob McNatt. The chosen method of death? Intentional dehydration and starvation.

What has Wendland, 45, done to deserve such a fate? He went into a coma in September 1993 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Sixteen months later, he awakened from the coma, paralyzed on one side and unable to walk, talk or swallow well enough to eat. He is physically and cognitively disabled and dependent on others for his care. He is not terminally ill. He is not hooked up to machines. He does require a feeding tube to sustain his life.

Those who seek to end Wendland's life downplay his physical and cognitive abilities. That is because people who are diagnosed as permanently unconscious are being dehydrated in this country, all perfectly legal thanks to several court decisions. Now, "right-to-die" activists such as Cranford who has testified in support of dehydration in most of the nation's major dehydration cases of brain-damaged patients, including that of Nancy Beth Cruzan want to stretch acceptable dehydration to disabled folk with brain damage who are awake and aware. You have it wrong. He discounted it because he said Quinlan DIED when Terri was only 11 or 12 years old.

Her friend made a joke when Quinlan died some 9 years later and Terri did not like the joke or the fact that Quinlan's parents had disconnected her respirator years before.

Cranford is the "doctor" that Greer based his findings on that Terri should be starved to death. Sick isn't it?!

I can promise that if this was my daughter who was being starved to death because of these IDIOTS someone would be paying for it. First of all, Michael Schiavo would have had his *ss kicked long before now. NO ONE would keep me from seeing my child and feeding him/her!!! NO ONE! They would have to kill me first and I would take a few of them with me!

Okay, call me crazy, tin foil, whatever - but I think this $1M guy was a plant by Felos to "prove" Michael isn't in this for the money. Does anybody know anything about this mysterious millionaire? So, flame away...

Can someone help me try to understand today's events? I watch the news and get one view and on FR another... My question is: The Florida DCF sent a neurologist to diagnose Terri today and found she most likely has been misdiagnosed and not PVS but in a 'minimally conscience state' (who wouldn't be after 6 days of starvation and dehydration). So, the DCF said they had the authority they could go in and take Terri. Then judge Greer puts a halt to this.

The news media is implying that that the judge's ruling has stopped the State of Florida DCF and they now have been blocked from taking Terri and now aside from the Supreme Court, Terri has no hope.

But, on FR I find discussion and articles that they do have the power and they do not have to abide by the judge's ruling. My husband also works with the Developmentally Disabled in another state agrees that the State has power over the judge's ruling. Is this correct? Is the Media behind on this and if so, why hasn't the State, having their neurologist's report, gone in to get her, especially now that she is failing rapidly in the past day?

Good info on Cranford. I saw him on Hannity and Colmes - his eyes were blinking so fast I was sure he was creating a breeze. Isn't eyeblinking a sign of lying?

I really wish Sean had asked this Dr. the percentage of cases he's testified for where he recommended the patient be kept alive. My guess would be zero.
