The would not give Sen (Dr.) Frist a brain scan. Doctors are in dispute. That is part of why this is such a compelling case.

Last time, she was given morphine, but her parents objected to the treatment.

Her brain cortex is gone or almost gone. Her brain stem is still working.

Layman's explanation from Reuters :

Brain scans that were part of the state court record showed the part of her brain that controls thought and voluntary movement had atrophied and filled with spinal fluid after the heart attack deprived it of oxygen.

The brain stem, which controls involuntary movement such as breathing and blinking, remains.
