Killing Terri Schiavo:
Where are defenders of women’s rights?

http://www.theunionleader.com/articles_showfast.html?article=52202

FOR THOSE who advocate killing Terri Schiavo, the brain-damaged Florida woman whose husband is hell-bent on ending her life, we have a question. Why not just shoot her?

For that matter, why not stab her, slit her throat, or suffocate her with a pillow? What’s the difference? She’ll be no less dead if her husband does any of those things than if she starves to death after he removes her feeding tube.

But there is a difference, isn’t there?

Shooting leaves such a mess. So do stabbing and slashing. And we’ve all seen those movies where some poor victim grasps at the pillow or telephone cord in a vain struggle for one last breath before everything goes dark. Too gruesome.

But starving her to death, now there’s the ticket. Nothing to clean up, no tense struggle.

It takes about two weeks for a person to die once a feeding tube is removed. It is a slow, painful death. And if that person is as mentally aware as Terri Schiavo appears to be, it must be a most horrible way to go — knowing that someone you loved and trusted has consigned you to this abominable end.

Ah, but there are the liberal intellectuals and some notable members of the Democratic Party — the Party of Death — arguing that it’s no one else’s business if Michael Schiavo, Terri’s husband, wants to kill her.

These are the same people who claim that conservative opposition to abortion is motivated only by a desire to keep women down. Yet here is a woman who is unmistakably alive, whose husband desperately wants to kill her, and the so-called enemies of women are the only ones taking her side.

The National Organization for Women is AWOL on this case. The American Civil Liberties Union is actually working with Michael Schiavo to end Terri’s life.

Terri Schiavo might be a woman, and a disabled person, but she is one the so-called women’s and civil rights movements are perfectly willing to sacrifice on the altar of “choice.”
