A newly compiled list of 100 patriotic songs for middle school students has led to a heated debate about how patriotic education should be carried out.

The list has sparked controversy because it includes some songs that encourage individualism rather than dedication to society.

Sources with the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission said it is the first time that a government agency has compiled such a list.

The controversy lies in the fact that among the 100 songs there are several Hong Kong and Taiwan pop songs....

Individualism in a communist (dictatorial) society. Fascinating.

Light shines through where it can.

Apparently the "controversy" is over one song in a list of 100 (most of which are likely from the Maoist era). Keep in mind that the China Daily is a government newspaper. This headline is for foreign consumption. "Look at how individualist we are!" Don't bite.

You are absolutely correct. In my opinion, that fact that they would try to promote something so trivial as this as an indication of theirs being an open society just goes to show you how far they really are from the same.

I apologize, I should have made my sarcasm a little more obvious. China Daily is a self proclaimed government newspaper, I hope everyone reads their sources before they take what is said to be true.

Just poking a bit of fun at China.

Thanks Semper_Volo,

Do you know by the way what the position of China Daily is as compared to the People's Daily? I remember reading a year ago on the People's Daily website a copy of the constitution of the PRC in English. It went at some length about the PRC's unique system of "democratic dictatorship." I am serious. I couldn't believe it. Someone needs to help them with their PR...or maybe not, seems Europe, and France in particular, love em' and they are selling their cheap crap like mad here in the U.S.
