North Korea warns US-S Korean military drill could result in "actual war"

SEOUL - North Korea warned on Sunday that annual US-South Korean military exercises due to start this week and designed to deter any military threat from the Stalinist country could turn into “an actual war”.

The North’s cabinet newspaper, Minju Joson, said the week-long military maneuvers beginning on March 19 in South Korea should be called off.

“There is no guarantee that the large-scale joint military exercises will not go over to an actual war,” Minju Joson said in a commentary carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.

“The US and the South Korean authorities should immediately cancel their plan for the provocative joint military exercises against (North Korea).”

The commentary said North Koreans would “wipe out all the aggressors” in the event of war.

Officials in Seoul and Washington have said the military drills are “purely defensive” and intended to check on the state of the US-South Korean military alliance.

The exercises come amid new diplomatic efforts to bring Pyongyang back into six-nation talks aimed at persuading it give up its nuclear weapons program.

They involve some of the US troops based here, thousands of US soldiers from abroad and South Korean military contingents.

The drills include mock battles aimed at evaluating command capabilities with troops mobilized for anti-commando operations and computer war games.

The USS Kitty Hawk, a US aircraft carrier based in Japan, will arrive in South Korea’s southern port of Busan Monday for the exercises, the US military newspaper Stars and Stripes said Sunday.

Some 32,500 US troops are stationed in South Korea to help deter possible aggression from communist North Korea.

About 650,000 South Korean troops have been stationed against North Korea’s 1.1-million-strong army on the Korean peninsula since the 1950-1953 Korean War.

We should've destroyed the Pueblo the week after it was taken.

We should have destroyed the port where they were forcing it to go.

"Truth is that one aircraft carrier scares the living begeezus out of them."

With the 80 F-16s and 15 A-10s in country already I think he already achieved maximum pucker factor. Having the carrier available simply allows PF to achieve critical mass.

In so far as war is something to be avoided when reason can achieve the desired outcome, I hope North Korea isn't foolish enough to take provocative measures.

But deep in my hard little warmongering heart, I hope that mad little fool does give us a reason to turn him into dictator tartar. It's well past time the U.S. Armed Forces were unleashed to lance the pustule of Pyongyang.

Yes, I thank all of you, it was the USS Pueblo that I was thinking of.

At the time I read about it, it bothered me that another country has one of our ships, even a small one.

It is amazing that we have not managed to sink it yet.

I'm glad these maneuvers make them nervous. That's what they're
designed to do.

Truth is that one aircraft carrier scares the living begeezus out of them.

Not to mention the strategic bombers recentl moved to Guam for an extended stay.B-2s to knock back their defenses a bit, then BUFFs to haul in the heavy metal.

Didn't they manage to capture on of our ships?

The name escapes me. Liberty?

Pueblo. 1968.

Pueblo AGER-2

The Liberty, a ship with a similar signals intelligence gathering mission, was attacked by Israeli aircraft and torpedo boats during the '67 war.

Liberty, AGTR-5

The Liberty lost 10 crewman during the attack. The Pueblo lost one, IIRC. The Liberty made it back to port, the Pueblo is still in port, in Won son North Korea.

We should've destroyed the Pueblo the week after it was taken.

That we could have done.

We should have destroyed the port where they were forcing it to go.

That we had no assets close enough to do....unless we wanted to nuke it. The only aircraft in range where USAF F-4s, on strip alert in South Korea, but they were armed with tactical nukes. They didn't even have any guns that they could have strafed the NK ships boats "escorting" Pueblo into harbor.

Liberty was the ship bombed by Israel

Torpedoed and shot up as well. But it didn't sink and made it into Malta on it's own power.

Thank you for finding the photos of the Liberty and the
Pueblo for us to see.

We hear about the Liberty all the time, as it was damaged by the Israeli, but rarely hear about the Pueblo.

More managed news.
