Former New Yorker now proud Mama of two native Texans.

Get out whlle you can and come to the promised land. Leave the liberal nightmare behind!

I would have left long ago, but I have responsibilities here which make that impossible at the moment.  I can, however, dream about a brighter future which may be different  :-)

What do you think is the 'best' city or town in Texas to live in?

It seems that Lubbock has gotten positive votes from a least a couple of people on this thread.

(I'm hoping that by asking such a question that I'm not going to start a fight among our Texas friends!)

Depends on what are you looking for. Educational opportunities? -- Austin. Night Life? -- Austin. Making money? -- Dallas or Houston. Wide open spaces? -- Midland or Amarillo. High School football? -- Odessa. Quiet place to retire? -- San Angelo. Resort town? -- San Antonio. Family friendly? -- Lubbock. Decorative pumpjacks? -- Luling.

I lived in Lubbock twenty years ago but go back there every few months. I still like what I see there but the town is growing by leaps and bounds, especially on the newer southwestern side. I always called it the "southwestern bulge." If you ever get a chance, check out Lake Ransom Canyon southeast of Lubbock. It's sort of like a beautiful "crack" in a pool table top. Only those who have been to Lubbock will understand this.

If you are looking for wide open spaces, anywhere outside of the DFW area is just beautiful.

I live in the DFW area and enjoy the metropolitan flavor. But the good news is, farm country is literally a half hour away in the car.

I've traveled the state, from Lubbock to South Padre and in between. There are any number of beautiful areas, each with it's own charm.

It's very inexpensive to buy a home down here, salaries are on par with other areas of the country (but no state income tax, yeah!), we have shopper's paradise and beautiful sunsets. Warning, though,we also have tornado season and folks are openly religious. If either of these bothers you, it's better to stay put.
