brave all the problems of life as an illegal worker... What problems?!

Trust me, life is tough for the guy who crosses over looking for work. But, as I said in my post, its tougher back home. The worse the Mexican government makes it sound for the abuses their people face in the US, whether supposed or real, the more difficult it is for them to explain why their people would rather face these hardships than stay home.

And the answer is that the hardships are worse back home, the injustices are worse back home, and at the end of the day, back home they have little to show for their hardships, whereas even as illegals in the US they have a better chance at a life than they do as full citizens where they came from.

I did some training gigs in Mexico a few years ago, and many of the techs I was training had lived in the US. Several of them had come home when they heard of a factory opening up in their hometown. For a dollar an hour, they left jobs on ranches and restaurants in the US and came home. When you understand that its not really any cheaper to live in Mexico than it is in the States, despite what you might think, it is telling that a buck or two an hour is all it takes to keep them home.

The fact that Mexico can't manage that, when they are one of the largest oil producers in the world, when their number one product sells on the international market for dollars, speaks volumes. They believe that our prosperity derives from their "cheap" labor. They can't explain how it is that the source of that cheap labor is a stagnant economy, while we can pay that so-called "cheap" labor 5 or 10 times what they make at home, and thrive.

And the answer is easy. Rule of law. Clean courts. Relatively free economy, relatively honest public officials. Its that simple.
