I agree. On the Making of the Passion special Mel said while he was making We Were Soldiers he kept thinking about making a movie about the Passion and one of the crew people said Mel kept coming up to him and saying "We gotta make the Passion" over and over. To me that remark was very telling and to me it points to the great sacrifice of the men laying down their lives for each other, how could one not think of Christ. It has been fascinating to see Mel's evolution!

In real life the young soldier in "WE WERE SOLDIERS" seen picking up the NVA French Army Bugle at the Battle of IA DRANG-1965 was Lt. RICK RESCORLA.
RICK RESCORLA unselfishly led his men to overcome continuous Communist enemy human wave assaults against them at Landing Zone X-Ray while he was singing "GOD Bless America" outloud to his fellow soldiers..!
RICK RESCORLA, as 1st Vice-President of Security for Morgan Stanley's 20 Middle Stories of the World Trade Center's Tower 2, evacuated everybody out after the 1993 WTC Bombing while singing 'GOD Bless America' outloud to them on his bullhorn. Afterwards he became famously known as 'The Last Man Out.'
RICK RESCORLA was doing the same thing after the Airstrikes of September 11, 2001 when Tower 2 came crashing down on him, after his having saved 1,000's of OTHER lives there.
Sacrifice is as Sacrifice does..?
