My father also was a 747 Capt. in the 1980's.

He lost 2 engines on takeoff,almost simultaneously, out of Narita. Dumped a lot of fuel (25 min.) into the sea.

Said it was very un-nerving trying to fly (near max.) 800,000 lbs. on two engines.

The engines on the early 747 acft were nowhere as good as the newer versions. The 747-400 engines put out in excess of 50,000#s of thrust per engine. They also have electronic fuel control which prevents (almost always) overtemping the engine. You Dad's model didn't have that luxury. He did a good job.
