Ex-Chief of Hewlett Seen as Candidate to Head World Bank By ELIZABETH BECKER
WASHINGTON, March 1 - Carleton S. Fiorina, who lost her job as chief executive of Hewlett-Packard last month, has emerged as a strong candidate to become the next president of the World Bank, according to an official in the Bush administration.
--edit--
Ms. Fiorina, the sole woman on the list of World Bank candidates, carries far less political baggage than Mr. Wolfowitz and has a reputation for dynamic leadership. As the head of a Fortune 500 company for six years, she gained managerial experience that puts her near the top of the list.
She would also add a touch of glamour as probably the only candidate famous enough to be known in business circles by her first name - Carly.
"Her candidacy is within the traditional mold in that America has on occasion gone to someone with a proven record in the corporate world because, at the end of the day, the World Bank is a big management challenge," said Lael Brainard, director of the poverty and global initiative at Brookings Institute.
The Europeans could take a page from the United States and block Mr. Wolfowitz' nomination just as the Clinton administration blocked the appointment of Caio Koch Weser, the German candidate to head the International Monetary Fund. The United States considered him too weak for the position.
As the assistant secretary of state for East Asia and later United States Ambassador to Indonesia, Mr. Wolfowitz did oversee policy covering the developing world.
But neither Mr. Wolfowitz nor Ms. Fiorina is an expert in development.

I can't wait to see what she can do to the World Bank.
"I can't wait to see what she can do to the World Bank."
The World Bank has no place to go but up.
There are a lot of people in the business world who believe
that HP would be out of business if not for Carly.
Her first name is "Charlton"?
...opps, make that "Carleton."
"There are a lot of people in the business world who believe

I've not met one of them. Certainly none are HP customers or resellers.
She's perfect. Merge all the underperforming economys into one giant, loser New World Order. Wunderbar!
The only people buying HP are people buying printers.
Dell knocked them right out of the market.
After buying Compaq she sold off its most valuable real estate. The buyer is building houses on it selling for as much as $3.5 Mill.
A friend of mine knew her at ATT. Her main skills back then were between the sheets and he tells me that nothing has changed.
Well, I can't comment about her business/financial/management abilities, but she is kind of a babe...
Nor anyone from Tandem or Compac.
Yeah, like voting...
BS: They make and sell the best Printers in the world. But Carly was imported from the failing AT&T empire and of course tried to use their failed business stategy for HP!
We're all gonna die. See you on the bread line...
Or owning property. ;-)
Compac=Compaq
Sorry I meant to say they make great printers, and thats all they are selling. Dell knocked them out of the PC market.
