Mostly babies are "allowed to die" in other countries, but even in the United States, there are some, even though it's supposed to be illegal.
Sun, that reminds me of an interview I saw not that long ago on tv, but I can't source it now.
A parent of a severely handicapped infant was given the option of having the baby "shelved" or "put on the shelf".
The parent didn't understand what was being said, so the nurse/technician said that in cases like that, they would put the just-born infant literally on an out of the way shelf, until it died.
Though it was a recent interview, this incident happened years ago.
The parents of this child opted to let him/her live, and were very happy to have this child in their lives, for as long as he lived, which I think was years.
