Florida lawmakers target Schiavo case
TALLAHASSEE, Fla., March 10 (UPI) -- A Florida Legislative committee has approved a bill to prevent removing the feeding tube from a brain-damaged Tampa woman.
The bill that passed the House Health Care Regulation Committee would prevent a guardian from withholding food and water from an incompetent person without direct orders from the patient, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Thursday.
The bill is aimed at Terri Schiavo, whose feeding tube is scheduled for removal March 18 by her husband, Michael, who said that's what she would want. Her parents are trying to prevent the removal and subsequent death of the woman who the courts have determined is in a permanent vegetative state.
Legislators passed a bill in the case last year, but it was subsequently ruled unconstitutional.
