We've seen the same effect in nearly atheistic societies such as Japan, moderately religious societies such as South Korea and Spain and highly religious societies such as the US and North African Muslim countries.

It has nothing to do with religion. It has to do with shifting economic realities. Few people can afford to have large numbers of kids in industrialized societies because the little goobers are so expensive to raise these days.
