on the importance of separation of state and education.

That's a diff issue! But sadly, if a state finances such an institution then it can not bow to pressure and censor speech - especially private speech since this asswipe's essay was for a non-state funded paper (where and for who it was written I don't know).

In any case I lived my whole life never hearing about this man now I will remember him for all my life.

I wonder if it was a slow radio talk show day and they brought up this as a way to build controversy and thus ratings? (sorry for the cynicism).

Oh, I disagree completely. If the state is funding it, the legislature should set guidelines as to what it will be willing to fund. This is a Democracy.

I, as a voter, get to vote on how my tax dollars are spent. I decide who the governor is - he's a state employee. I similarly should get to decide who is a professor at a public college. My secret love makes this all perfectly clear.
