You're delusional. Quentin Tarantino spawned an entire genre of ultra-violent, independent films that are directed at young, males and that changed the direction of storytelling for decades. And the entire body of films by black film makers are the most vile and disgusting ever created. Then there is the whole "American Pie" group and their spin-offs.

Being a member of the Academy and the Writers Guild, I have to watch just about every movie made in a year. Believe me, the 80's were child's play next to the cesspool generated in the 90's.

I don't understand the big deal about it, I like the ultra violence IF it's done with a good story line. I came of age in the late 80s, early 90s. I choose to watch films that don't have the 50s style wholesome storylines with and woefully predictable endings. The 90s were chuck full of Disney films and family movies that had those elements - and they were rewarded in boxoffice revenue for producing them. If people like family movies, they should be allowed to watch them. Likewise, If I want to see Shawn of the Dead - I should be able to watch it in its all its immoral glory without some moralistic pinhead trying to tamper with it before it gets a chance to hit the screen. Let the market make the decisions.

Tarantino invigorated American film making in the 90s. You don't think Reservoir Dogs or Pulp fiction have more intelligence then something like 'Top Gun' or 'Three Men and a Baby' which was the commerical norm just a few years earlier? anything really popular will generate bad imitations. There's no way around it.

I have to agree, but you are leaving out the beginnings, as least as I saw them, of such ultra violent filmaking that started in the late 60s by Sam Peckinpah.

If I remember correctly, it was a dispute over writers credits in The Wild Bunch that prompted the writers guild to rewrite rules that now state that a finished script must have at least 60% of it written by the director before he or she can claim a writer credit.
