It's a good habit to have. I used to frequent a bar that was often overcrowded. I would set by one of the exits and even check to make sure it was unlocked. My friends called me paranoid until the fire in Rhode Island.

You did the right thing! When I was little we liked to ride in the first car of the subway, my dad would always check to make sure it was actually locked. They always were. When I had a kid, she liked to ride in the first car of the PATH trains. I always checked to make sure the door was actually locked. One time it wasn't! I pointed this out to the motorman and he locked it.
You can never be too careful about some things. You were right to make sure the doors were unlocked, I was right to make sure they were!
