Teacher accused of sex with 2 students

A Cupertino high school choir teacher has been charged with having sex with two of his students.

Brett Michael Bartlett, 25, of Campbell was arrested Tuesday at Homestead High School, where he has served as the choir teacher for the last three years. Investigators were called after two students told school officials they suspected Bartlett was having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old female student.

This is not uncommon. I have heard of many cases that do not make the newspapers. Sometimes the teacher is fired, punished administratively, or nothing is done at all. And this is just the ones who are caught.

Somehow I have a hard time thinking of a 16 year old American girl these days as a " child " , if you get my drift . Not to condone what he teacher did but ...What I am tired of is this double standard that exists . If a female teacher has sex with a 13 year old she gets a slap on the wrist compared to what happens to a male teacher who sleeps with a female student ...

Maybe I've been in Japan too long ( 19 years ) , but compared to the girls I see/meet when I'm back home a 16 year old Japanese girl looks innocent as a 50's teenager in America ( not that they were always innocent ) ...

Perhaps I've been in Japan too long ...The girls here , while not completely innocent by any stretch of the imagination , are comparable to 50's teenagers in the USA ... and they look innocent for the most part ...Problem is , THAT is what the perves/pedophiles GO for over here !

Actually - no, I don't think that's the case. Two reasons: 1. From my observations, the problem of teachers having relations with students has been around a VERY long time. But like many moral problems, these things for many years were kept quiet and either ignored or dealt with in private. Much like the problem with Catholic Priests molesting kids - it has only relatively recently been a public issue. 2. I'm not sure how many of those committing this ugly crime are actually "pedophiles" in the traditional definition. I think most of those teachers who can't keep it in their pants never thought about teaching as a way to "get kids in bed". Most pursued teaching for the same reasons most of us in the profession did. But those individuals who don't have the moral compass and willpower to resist the temptation. Also- the line between appropriate and inappropriate has been blurred - no thanks to those "leaders" who try to change the definition of the word "is" and "sex" (Clinton and company). Regardless of why these teachers step over the line - it's still completely wrong and disgusting. I have had several students over my 11 years of teaching that were rather attractive. But that's as far as my "feelings" towards them went - I just cannot bring myself to think of these young ladies as anything but "kids", even when they look like adults. My brain just won't allow that. I also would venture to guess that student/teacher relations happen FAR more than we will ever officially know about. Many of the cases out there would never have been reported had a concerned parent not stepped forward to halt it.

It strikes me as odd that people are quick to broadbrush all public school teachers yet hesitent to do so with other institutions when perverts are found.

This is a rarity. Some lesser counselors, young, and lacking in experience might make a mistake but most can discern real accusations....according to a friend of mine who has been doing this for 25 years.

More often are the adult accusations which are more difficult to prove. Husbands and wives seeking child custody, harassment suits etc.
