But not everyone agreed. Dr. Robert C. Gallo, a co-discoverer of the AIDS virus and director of the Institute of Human Virology at the University of Maryland, was very skeptical of yesterday's announcement.

I see this situation being utilized to demand millions of dollars for New York in order to eradicate a disease that has been in existence for at least 30 years. It is typical New York politics.

I like the story about crystal meth usage and the homosexual orgies that occur - quite titillating I am sure!!! But there is nothing wrong with being gay- I mean doesn't this kind of activity reign among young heterosexuals? I have an AIDS patient that says it is the most brutal disease he is full of lesions that have to be cut off - nasty- he should come forward and let these young studs see what's ahead for them. He takes minimum 30 pills a day and they all make you feel like you have the flu. Keep it up ! And we worry about Africa! This could have been stopped years ago in the interest of the public health but for the gay lobby and the ACLU_-but NO- that would stop their non reproductive rights!

The virus was found in a New York City man in his mid-40's who engaged in unprotected anal sex with other men on multiple occasions while he was using crystal methamphetamine.

No amount of money is going to solve attitudes.

All of the money spent since the 80's on "AIDS awareness" and the like and we still have this type of behavior. Sometimes you have to cut your losses.

Part of the problem is that society has lost it's fear of HIV/AIDS, because, although still fatal, the drug cocktails have extended lifespans. It's no longer seen as a deadly disease. Drug cocktails can keep you alive for decades.

I remember, in the mid-80's and early '90's, being absolutely TERRIFIED of AIDS, and I had NO risk factors. NONE. But the idea was still scary as heck. These days, that fear isn't there.

Actually, it goes farther back than that. I saw a documentary recently which presented a pretty compelling case that the HIV virus jumped species from chimpanzees through a particular oral polio imunization effort in Africa in the 1950's. Apparently, one researcher in the then Belgian Congo in the early 1950's was using chimpanzee blood and organ material (liver, kidneys) to culture live polio virus. Once cultured, the virus was weakened and made into pill form. Other researchers at the time used green monkey or mackack monkey blood and organs for producing vaccine precisely because of the potential for a cross species infection. Although this researcher denies using chimps, workers who assisted in the production of the vaccine say hundreds of chimps were slaughtered for their blood and organs to use to grow polio cultures during this time. Millions of doses of this tainted polio vaccine were given in Africa, primarily in the Belgian Congo and surrounding countries and the first HIV/AIDS type symtoms ever noted correlate nearly perfectly to where this particular polio immunization was given.

Oh, and the country behind the tainted vaccine was France.

Some AIDS specialists outside New York City expressed skepticism about the alarm, believing that it might be an isolated case related to the patient's immune system. But Dr. Frieden said the case heightened the importance of using condoms.

As usual, the "analysts" miss the point. Look at that last sentence. This story tells me of the importance of homosexual men keeping their joy sticks to themselves. Damn, it's so obvious.
