The cost to you will likely go up if everyone buys these low cost policies.
The cost of medical care for the uninsured right now is picked up by the hospital (and they raise costs for everyone) or by government (which you pay). If these people buy insurance, their medical costs still have to be paid by the insurance company (and overall insurance rates go up plus the insurance company makes a nice profit).
There is no free lunch... those medical costs do not go away with insurance, in the end you pay with either higher insurance payments, higher hospital bill or more taxes.
The only way to decrease your insurance cost is to control overall medical expenses (tort reform, reduced services, less middlemen, more competition, etc.)
We could cut HC costs 10% tomorrow if there was a voluntary switch to the best aspect of the Canadian system:
........Uniform forms........
WE have separate forms for every insurance company, hmo, medicare, medicaid you name it.
Canadians pay about 3% of the health care dollar for papaerwork.
We pay 10-15%%. Total waste. Ask any doctor.
