Matthews: White House Staged Slain Marine Mom's Hug
NewsMax.com ^ | 2/3/05

MSNBC's "Hardball" host Chris Matthews suggested last night that the high point of President Bush's State of the Union Address - the emotional hug between grateful Iraqi voter Safia Taleb al-Suhail and Janet Norwood, mother of a Marine who died liberating her country - was staged by the White House.

The cynical host apparently first voiced his skepticism during a commercial break. His comments were immediately seized upon by "Hardball" guest, MSNBC contributor Pat Buchanan when the show returned.

Nah! If it was staged, they would have seated the two women side by side. It was rally awkward for them to reach one another the way they were seated one behind the other.

disco - hate to be rude but you are becoming tiresome with your bid for attention on "the hug". Get out of your plastic "entertainment junkie" world once in a while. I don't think you are convincing anyone with your "expertise".
Good day.

Does this mean that State of the Union addresses don't just spontaneously happen in a random manner that coincidentally occur about the same time each year? Next thing you know we'll find out that our elections have been planned in advance!

I went to the funeral of a young Marine killed in Iraq, this past summer.
I did not know the Marine, but, was visiting my sister and she asked me to come with her.
The entire town turned out and in the spontaneity and emotion of the moment, I wound up hugging perfect strangers.
We were united in our respect for this young man and his family.
To say this was scripted is loathesome .
It could have blown up in the face of the planners had the Marine's mother had been stiff or rejected the hug.
The Mastodon media, Chris Matthews, Ron Reagan ,et al are insulting the integrity of a Gold Star Marine Mom.
We can't say it often enough, but, just when we think the left couldn't sink any lower-they lower the bar.

From "Elements of Psychpathology" by White and Gilliland

"*Projection* refers to the automatic and unconscious attribution of one's disowned attitudes and urges to some external agent, usually a person or persons".
Only by reading psychiatric texts can one understand Democrats.

Just found Matthews' date of birth...12/18/1945. So he probably graduated from college in 1967 or 1968, at the height of the Vietnam War, and his Peace Corps service was probably in the late '60s since he was never in the military and presumably would have been drafted if he had not been in the Peace Corps.

That's actually fairly faulty reasoning.

On one hand, Mom didn't have to be in on it for it to be staged. The Iraqi woman could have been 'in' on it without the Mom knowing.

On another hand, neither could have been 'in' on it but they could have been seated and positioned to be close, and the Bush posse could have just took a 50-50 shot that nature would take its course and one or the other would extend a hug.

In that case, 'staged' would be an extreme word to describe it. I don't doubt at all that the Bush Co seated them this way and hoping for a 'moment.' If that is 'staged,' then yes, I am fairly certain it was staged.

The camera was on them because a VIP/Guest of the President (the Iraqi women) was being introduced by the President. Cameras focusing in on a VIP sitting mext to, or near, the current First Lady, has been happening for MANY YEARS. Nothing new.

I'm surprized he didn't accuse the Bush administration of having him killed so his parents could be used as a prop in the State of the Union address.
