Ice, ice baby (Vikes' Culpepper ungifts necklace from paralyzed HS player)

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- Daunte Culpepper showed off his scrambling ability Wednesday -- in a crowded convention center ballroom.

The Minnesota Vikings quarterback presented a paralyzed high school football player two diamond necklaces worth about $75,000 during an NFL awards ceremony, but then awkwardly asked for them back after it was finished.

The apparent gift prompted a mother to cry, a father to think about buying a safe to store it and Culpepper to find a way out of the mess.

"I'll get him something else," Culpepper said sheepishly.

The confusion began at the FedEx ground and air player of the year honors, where finalists Culpepper, Peyton Manning, Shaun Alexander and Curtis Martin were on stage for the announcement.

When the master of ceremonies opened the floor for questions, Jerry Townsend spoke up from his wheelchair in the front row.

"Hey Daunte, can I get some of that ice?" he said in a low voice, referring to the two sparkling necklaces hanging around Culpepper's neck.

Culpepper jumped up, pulled them off and brought them over to Townsend, a senior defensive back at Jacksonville Episcopal High School who was paralyzed from the neck down while making a tackle in October.

Chronic back pain is one mutha of a teacher. "Now let's see how much you can take, little man."

What else could Culpepper have done in this situation?

He could have said, "No!"

Personally I think it was pretty rude for the kid to ask.

I wonder if Rush and the sainted Mr Favre got all their drugs legally? Weak people who cant control themselves.

Rush, no. Brett Favre, yes and no.

Farve, had prescriptions, then again Farve deals with more physical pain then most folks, but Farve also, at the same time, was also getting the same pain killers from his teammates.

I'm not sure whats weaker, quitting and retiring from pain and hurt, or taking vikes so you can live in pain and hurt for more years.

Farve's self control is pretty well known, as he has never missed a game, and has a consecutive streak going.

If Farve is weak then a big rig is a skateboard.

Why yes I am attacking the over rated Favre. He is an admitted drug addict. I say the same thing about Rush Limbaugh. All weak people if they have to use the crutch of drugs.

Those drugged crutch users have done far more good in their lives than you ever will.

He's a football player, not a seasoned and reasoned diplomat. He was caught off guard and got clumsy. I can't see bashing the young guy for what was simply an embarrassing faux pas.

Well okay I can see your point. Just to me, it comes off as selfish.

For all you know, Culpepper could have done that.

He could have. For all you know, the SI article could have been dead on accurate. I'm just going by what was in the article. Someone asked a question and I gave my opinion.

[I never wish back injuries on people, but in your case I'll make an exception. You'll beg for drugs. You'll redefine 'weak'.]

Yup. I've been there too, broken neck and some back problems. I don't think I was ever addicted, but I can sure see that a point can be reached where addiction can be preferable to being completely non-functional. It's pretty easy to toss the word weakling around when you haven't been in thatstate for months or years.

The confusion began at the FedEx ground and air player of the year honors, where finalists Culpepper, Peyton Manning, Shaun Alexander and Curtis Martin were on stage for the announcement.

Curtis Martin should win this, being the oldest RB ever to win the rushing title, and leaping from 10th to 4th all-time in a signle season. I would have given it to Manning, but he sucked so bad vs. the Pats that he made a mockery of his entire eason.

Where is the proof Rush got drugs illegally?

His admnission.

When the story broke, it was an accusation from the woman who worked for him, she spelled out that it was illegally.

Rush, on his own show, when he addmitted his problem, also made it clear that it was "true, all true".

I.E. Rush's admission verifying that womans claim is the proof.

No, I really dount you read the article BEFORE you posted that reply. I think the urge to post the reply FIRST on a new thread was too great of a temptation

I did read the article and from what was there, he made it seem as if the kid was going to KEEP the jewelry. Why didn't he just say no or laugh it off? And please spare me. I don't live to post the first replies on threads at all.

Oh suureeee, a room full of reporters and have Daunte say "NO! You cant touch my BLING BLING!"

That would have gone off really nicely now wouldnt it? Why in GODS NAME would some strangers start asking where they can buy a SAFE for another mans property? And then CRY when the owner asks for it back? WTF???? Are people THIS stupid? Any moron would know that Daunte was just letting them hold it.
