Firefox 1.1's Release Pushed Back To June

The next version of the popular open-source Firefox will likely show up in June of 2005, not March as earlier expected, the browser's lead engineer wrote this weekend in his blog.

"In a move that I would hope should surprise exactly nobody, we're pushing back 1.1 by a little bit because of the realities of the work remaining to be done," wrote Ben Goodger.

The updated road map for Firefox 1.1 noted that beta should ship in early April, with a final edition to follow in June. The next major revision, dubbed 2.0, is still on track for release sometime during 2005, according to the road map.

Goodger, who last week announced that he had been hired by Google -- but will continue working on Firefox at least part time -- denied that the change in employers caused the delay.

"The slippage from March is not due to my move to Google, it is due to us needing to ensure the 1.1 release is of identical quality and scope as the 1.0 release," he wrote. "That means a period of testing, the localization system needs to be brought back online, etc. These things are done by more people than just myself, so quit with the wacky speculation."

Hellow ShadowAce, I'm just tagging a question onto your last comment. If anyone has any ideas for me to try with a little problem, please comment. Sorry for the looong post.

[Short history: after reading at FR how great Firefox was, I got it, as I had difficulty with IE after windows updates. My older version of Netscape (4.6) was so outdated, it didn't work so hot, so I didn't use that either. I tried Opera for awhile, but didn't care for it.]

Downloaded Firefox - and LOVED it! Then, when I realized my one real important site (online grocery shopping place) wouldn't recognize nor use the Firefox browser, I had to download Netscape 7.2. That works fine for groceries.

I chose not to register Netscape (optional I thought) because they wanted too much info.

Now, when I start my computer, I get an error (not windows error) that says "Failed to open Mozlla registry file."

In addition, when I use Firefox here at FR, I don't see photos I've posted from photobucket. When I use Netscape at FR, photos show up.

I've tried searching the help info both at Netscape and Firefox. Here's the closest thing I could find.

On Windows, Firefox can be used with Sun's Java Runtime Environment (JRE). It can not be used with the Microsoft Java VM, as that can only be used with Internet Explorer. Versions of Sun's JRE older than 1.3.0_01 will not work.

It is possible to install JRE 1.4.2_01 from within Firefox, using XPInstall technology.

By far the easiest way to get Java working is to install Firefox with the Unofficial Installer, then install Java using XPInstall.

If you have already downloaded Firefox as a ZIP file, you can add the registry information that JRE 1.4.2 and later require by hand. To do this, save this registry file to your desktop, and double-click to import it. If you are asked if you want to add the information to the Windows registry, click Yes. After this is done, you can install JRE 1.4.2 if required, then restart Firefox and use Java.

If neither of the above solutions work, you can use JRE 1.4.1_05 until the issue you are having is resolved. JRE 1.4.1_05 does not require the information in the Windows registry that JRE 1.4.2 does."

Is the above info what I want, do you think?

I have Windows XP Pro. I know absolutely nothing about java.

That's just weird. Have you tried re-installing it? I don't think it's an OS issue--I use it on Linux, XP, and 98SE.

Hmmm. I've not run into these problems, though I think I've seen them mentioned here before.

Have you tried uninstalling both Firefox and Netscape and reinstalling?

Have you installed Sun's JRE? If so, what version is it? If not, try installing that, making sure that it's the latest version.

Since Netscape is built from Mozilla code (I think), that Mozilla registry file error may apply to either of them.

Firefox has an extension that lets it appear as another browser. Tools->Extensions->Get New Extensions, then look for User Agent Switcher.

I don't know about the picture/image problem. Sorry. Perhaps after doing the above it will magically go away. No promises, though.

I use the home version of XP...might be some ad aware or spybot settings.

Windows IDs excite.com as an "unsafe zone" and a couple spyware programs ID their cookies as spyware....

sometimes its fine, but about 2/3 of the time excite just locks up....

Alrighty - good suggestions! I did not install Sun Java (JRE?). I'll do that first. If that doesn't do it, I'll uninstall and reinstall both browsers.

Is there any Firefox guru who can help me with a problem? I can not get my printer to work with Firefox. If I want to print something I have to cut and paste it into another browser or copy the webpage address and open another browser. It's not a big problem...just an annoyance.
