BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Sen. Hillary Clinton collapsed during an appearance here Monday before delivering a speech on Social Security.

Clinton was not taken to a hospital and was expected to continue on with her schedule, an aide said.

Clinton was speaking in warm room in front of 150 people, according to one of her aides. She had been suffering from some sort of 24-hour flu.

"She was weak and needed to sit down. She fainted," said the aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Colleen DiPirro, president of the Amherst Chamber of Commerce, told WBEN-AM radio that Clinton told the crowd she was feeling weak and had had a stomach virus. Clinton started to speak then collapsed, DiPirro told the radio station.

Clinton was at the Saturn Club in Buffalo, a private club in the city. The general manager of the club said Clinton walked out of the building under her own power and smiling.

"I saw her walk out the door by herself, she smiled and said 'thank you'," said the manager, Vincent Tracy.

The speech at the Saturn Club preceded one Clinton was scheduled to deliver later in the day at a Catholic college despite protests from anti-abortion groups and reluctance from the Catholic diocese. She was expected to discuss health care, not her pro-abortion stance -- the cause of the protesters' anger.

Several dozen people were waiting to hear that address. There were also hundreds of protesters waiting at the college.

During an earlier editorial board meeting Monday at The Buffalo News, Clinton complained about suffering from a flu-like bug that affected several of her staff members during a weekend retreat in Westchester. Clinton lives in Westchester County.

The former first lady was elected to the Senate from New York in 2000 to replace Democrat Daniel Patrick Moynihan, who had decided to retire. She easily beat then-U.S. Rep. Rick Lazio after the Republican Party's original candidate, then-New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani withdrew from the race after announcing he had prostate cancer.

Long a lightning rod for conservatives, Clinton, 57, had said she planned to run for re-election in 2006. She is considered a leading contender for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.

Her 58-year-old husband underwent quadruple bypass surgery in September.

...she smiled and said 'thank you',...

Something's definitely wrong with her.
