This president is a jackass. What does he really think that his guest worker program will achieve? He wants to match up workers to businesses, but if a worker can't find a business then they'll just come here illegally anyway. We need a fence to stop control the drugs and illegals from coming into this country.

So much for protecting our borders.
And protecting our cities that are overrun with them already.
Here's an idea let states deal with the problem as they see fit!

It isn't that American workers don't/won't do those jobs. Employers realize they can pay an illegal alien under the table, and without paying the added Social Security tax, at a much lower wage than those (lazy) American will work for. Until there are real penalties for corporations and others who employ illegals, it won't be stopped. There is no incentive to hire Americans. When the big three auto companies figure out a way to do away with the unions, the whole thing will go down the drain. We've lost 75%+ of manufacturing already.

"The people who want to kick them all out are not reasonable people"
Truer words were never spoken.
But Representative Tom Tancredo, Republican of Colorado and chairman of the Congressional immigration caucus, vowed to defeat any program that in his view would reward lawbreakers, even questioning the president's motives. "Could it be just the corporate interests, the money interests that rely so heavily on cheap labor?" he asked
Keep it up Tommy Boy. Soon you'll find yourself with your mentor Buchanan. Relegated to the political trash heap with only your .1% following left to stroke your ego. Oh, and keep moving to the left with comments about the evil "corporate interests". Sounding more like a Democrat every day.

Why has Bush ordered the Iraqi border sealed during the Iraqi elections, but says our southern border is impossible to protect?

At least half of the border patrol should be arresting employers and deporting the illegals that work for them after fining and giving them a jail sentence

"Party conservatives, however, have strenuously opposed a guest worker plan " Only a very vocal few and only because the Old Media will give them publicity for opposing President Bush. Isn't it odd that the NY Times and Washington Post are leading the crusade against illegal immigrants?

"Immigrants are not terrorists, except a few of them," he said. "The legislation that was introduced today is designed to get the bad apples out of the barrel before the barrel was spoiled." What a stupid statement. There isn't anything in this bill that culls terrorists from laborers.
The only reason the anti-immigrants want to deny drivers' licenses to illegals is they think that will give citizens a competitive advantage in the job competition.
But if anyone can't compete with an illegal immigrant for a job now, this bill won't make any difference. In a non-union state you can't force employers to hire bad workers. They'll just relocate to a business-friendly state. If we cripple American businesses enough they'll just relocate over seas.

We need to tighten controls on immigration and better protect our borders. And try to remove as many illegal aliens as we can. Its both a national secrity and quality of life issue. Sure we'll pay a few cents more for groceries and restaurant meals. But what's more important - keeping prices low or keeping our country safe? I'd gladly pay a little extra to make sure another 9/11 never again happens here.

"In an interview, Representative Chris Cannon, a Utah Republican who supports the president's plan, said a guest worker program would not amount to an amnesty because it would include a monetary penalty for currently illegal immigrants. "The people who want to kick them all out are not reasonable people," he said."
This has to be the most asinine statement. A monetary penalty doesn't do squat to undo the damage illegals cause American citizens. Bush's plan also enables terrorists to hide behind legitimacy.
To: neverdem
OK then, I am not a "reasonable person". I want them ALL kicked out and ALL their assets in this nation forfeited to he government to pay their bills. There is no other crime where one gets to keep the fruits of the crime. Why should this be any different?

the problem that i see with this is that as soon as they are authorized guest workers, supposedly here just to do the jobs we wont do, they are going to start taking better paying jobs for far less money. how do we tell them: "ok, but you cant take any GOOD jobs!"?
and thats just the beginning of the problem.
To: neverdem
At a news conference, he said the committee would not consider other immigration proposals, implicitly including the president's, until his own measure passed. Bush's plan shouldn't be considered period. If that turkey ever becomes law the American nation as we've known it will be gone forever.

Attention Moron: We don't want your stinking guestworker program and we're not going to stand for it! Do you really think we want to go thru the rest of our lives paying high taxes to subsidize your donor's cheap labor? Think again.
