Commentary: Coulter’s Take on Berry’s ‘Mau-Mauing’ Reveals Her Own Insecurities (Slams Ann)
BAW ^ | 1/26/05 | Gregory Kane

Posted on 01/27/2005 12:03:46 PM PST by pissant

In those rare moments where I’m actually embarrassed, I have a standard quip that eases the burden: “I’m used to being embarrassed. I’m a black conservative.”

Well, it’s pull-the-paper-bag-down-over-my-head time again, courtesy of Ann Coulter, who for the purposes of this column is Miss Ann Coulter, and I give not a tinker’s dam whether she pardons the pun.

Coulter is the conservative author and columnist who can match wits and words with the best of them. She’s fairly good-looking, but she’s no Halle Berry (More on that later.)

I pondered whether I should pick up Coulter’s latest work — How To Talk To A Liberal (If You Must) — when I saw it in a local bookstore recently. I’ll have to admit, I hesitated. As a black conservative, I do indeed have trouble talking to liberals. It’s almost as vexing as talking to white conservatives who are totally clueless on the matter of race.

In How To Talk To A Liberal, Coulter unleashes her inner clueless white girl, and lets her run buck wild for well over 300 pages. Oh, it’s not all bad. Her pieces on the 2000 presidential election, and how the U.S. Supreme Court got it right while the Florida Supreme Court got it wrong, are classic. So much for President George W. Bush “stealing” that election.

But on matters of race, Coulter couldn’t get a clue if it pimp slapped her.

“(Halle) Berry successfully mau-maued her way to a Best Actress Award … ” Coulter wrote of Berry’s winning the Oscar in 2002 for Monster’s Ball. Then, after that gratuitous bit of race-baiting, Coulter accused Berry of some race-baiting of her own to win the Oscar when the sultry actress pointed out — correctly — that black actors and actresses still have trouble getting some roles.

You see what’s going on here, don’t you? Coulter had no problem with Denzel Washington winning an Oscar the same year. His was “deserved,” according to Coulter. It was Berry — despite a near unanimous consensus that she did indeed turn in the best performance by an actress that year — who “mau-maued” her way to an Academy Award.

This is nothing but catty hater-ation. What bothers Coulter is not Berry’s “mau-mauing,” but the knowledge that she’ll never even come close to being as fine as Berry is. Memo to Miss Ann: put your claws back in, dear.

Coulter really got buck wild on the issue of the Confederate battle flag, which still bugs a lot of black folks. It doesn’t bug me as much. I’m more concerned that Coulter all but accused Berry of terrorism, probably the better to increase her street cred with the David Duke wing of American conservatives (How this slight escaped those black folks who vigilantly ferret out every offense to the race is beyond me.). But Coulter said enough things wrong in defending the Confederate battle flag that are worthy of correction.

“Man for man,” Coulter wrote, “the Confederate army was the greatest army the world had ever seen.”

That would actually be the Zulus under Shaka, and any military historian worthy of being called one would tell Coulter that.

Southerners fly the Confederate battle flag, Coulter contended, to commemorate their glorious military heritage, not because of racism. But then she slipped and let in a little truth.

“The Ku Klux Klan did not begin using the Confederate flag until the fifties,” Coulter wrote. That’s true, but the total truth is that it wasn’t just the KKK. Southern state legislatures, schools and plenty of non-KKK folks found new love for the Confederate battle flag in the 1950s. If Coulter wanted to be honest, she could have given the precise date.

May 17, 1954.

Yes, the Confederate battle flag flew highly and proudly after the Supreme Court ruled segregated schools unconstitutional. Wherever the forces of integration clashed with those of segregation there were good ol’ Bubbas waving the Confederate flag and yelling about how they’d die before they let nigger boys into their schools and rub up against white gals like, well, like Ann Coulter, for example.

That was the battle the neo-Confederates wanted to wage when their precious flag made its reappearance in the 1950s. It would be refreshingly honest if they — and Coulter — would simply admit that.

LOL! Sounds good to me. ;o)

Could be that some of his posts were pulled,
and they don't show up in his comments.
I hope he's only been reprimanded, too.

I have learned NEVER to argue with a LOTR fan!!! I know nothing about the books or the movies. However, she's a great actress, as she proved by her spot on portrayal of Katherine Hepburn in the Aviator. She's truly an actress, meaning she just doesn't play herself to varying degrees (take that Julia Roberts) in every movie she's in.

Not true. That's a falsehood perpetuated by Northerners (victors) to make themselves look good. Including the idea that all Northerners really wanted to get in the war at all.

LOL, hardly an expert here. Just dabbling, and mostly just a RevWar fan.

But the MDers of so few in # holding off some of the best fighters in the world was a legend until the RevWar became just "pre-Lincoln" unimportant history to this country, and were referred to as the "300 Spartans" (of which you may have heard).

Biggest difference - all MDers of the Line were totally brand new to any fighting, having just arrived in NY 2 weeks prior. All the more shocking, considering their compatriots had been fighting for up to a year or more, starting at a place called Lexington Green.

The reason they handed it to Rice is EXACTLY cuz she's in w/Republicans.

I stated elsewhere it is ALWAYS about communist politics for liberals of any color.

Communists use every kind of "issue" they can - preferrably in the form of some group - as smoke&mirrors over the real issue - pushing their commie ideas.

If they have to choose between lambasting a white or lambasting a Republican (non-commie), they'll choose the Repub to chew out.

This is from Fact Monster.com, but it's no real secret for anyone who cares to look it up:

Origins and Early Years
The name was first used by Thomas Jefferson's party, later called the Democratic Republican party or, simply, the Democratic party. The name reappeared in the 1850s, when the present-day Republican party was founded. At that time the crucial issue of the extension of slavery into the territories split the Democratic party and the Whig party, and opponents of the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 organized the new Republican party. Jackson, Mich., is called the birthplace of the party (July 6, 1854) and Joseph Medill is credited with having suggested its name, but these distinctions are also claimed for other places and other men.

By 1855 the new party was well launched in the North. Anti-slavery Whigs such as William Seward and Thurlow Weed were dominant in the new grouping, but elements of the Know-Nothing movement, together with the Free-Soil party, abolitionists, and anti-Nebraska Democrats also supplied strength. The party's national organization was perfected at Pittsburgh in Feb., 1856, and its first presidential candidate, John C. Frémont, made a creditable showing against victorious James Buchanan. The party opposed the repeal of the Missouri Compromise and the extension of slavery, denounced the Supreme Court's decision in the Dred Scott Case, and favored the admission of Kansas as a free state.

"Both Ann and this Dude are Smokin' something. There was one army, and one only, that NEVER lost a SINGLE battle where the odds against them were close to 1:1.

"Which Army? The Wehrmacht, 1939-1945.

"They were overwhelmed by a massive Allied superiority in personnel and equipment, plus by the imbecility of their impulsive, syphillis and methamphetamine-addled micromanaging "Corporal-in-Chief" Hitler. Had Hitler left his Generals to run the entire war, Europe (and European Russia) would today be speaking German."

I agreed with you up until the last sentence. Let's assume the best case scenario: Germany wipes out England's army at Dunkirk (they didn't due to Hitler's orders) and invades Russia early in 1942, rather than June.

Let's say they establish a beach head on England. I can't see them holding it without control of the sea and air. They could have had control of the air, but not the sea.

Let's say they take Leningrad, Stalingrad, and Moscow before the winter of '42 hits. They still haven't conquered the Urals, where the Soviet factories were relocated. They still don't stop the Lend Lease program that helped Russia.

Let's say they fend off D-Day and hold Europe until 1945. They'll still face the A-bomb from US B-29s. Even a thousand Messerschmidt F-269's couldn't stop a thousand B-29's. The industrial infrastructure of Germany would still be gone by 1945 and the A-Bomb would finish them off.

So I think the war would be over in 1945, even if Hitler were a perfect general.

One of Hitler's generals proposed a drive through the Middle East, up through Turkey and the Caucauses. Germany would have obtained the oil from the Middle East, and Russia would have been surrounded. Der Fuehrer was not interested in the Middle East, however.

Had Germany gone hellbent on their secret weapon technology, the war also might have gone quite differently.

Russia might have maintained a Siberian core, but European Russia could well have been German.

"Why are the Left and Spike Lee so obsessed with Jungle Fever"
Its not just the Left.
Case in point.
In the Summer of 1967,at our all white summer enclave at Lake Tahoe,a girl named Marilyn brought a black male friend up from Reno for the day to show him the beach.
Man,I will NEVER forget how everyone on that beach just went dead quiet as the two teenagers strolled along the shore. It was like the Martians had landed.People just stared in awe.Who WAS this big Negro stud and what was he DOING with that white chick?
Remember, this was the Summer of 1967 and the cities were on fire because of the ghetto riots.
True, some of these good white folks at Marla Bay that day could have been liberals.
But I betcha the vast majority would have identified as silent majority conservatives.

More reason to blush. The blow-dried wonder had this exchange with the BBC's Bob McKeown in Canada:

Coulter: "Canada used to be one of our most loyal friends and vice-versa. I mean Canada sent troops to Vietnam - was Vietnam less containable and more of a threat than Saddam Hussein?"

McKeown interrupts: "Canada didn't send troops to Vietnam."

Coulter: "I don't think that's right."

McKeown: "Canada did not send troops to Vietnam."

Coulter (looking desperate): "Indochina?"

McKeown: "Uh no. Canada ...second World War of course. Korea. Yes. Vietnam No."

Coulter: "I think you're wrong."

McKeown: "No, took a pass on Vietnam."

Coulter: "I think you're wrong."

McKeown: "No, Australia was there, not Canada."

Coulter: "I think Canada sent troops."

McKeown: "No."

Coulter: "Well. I'll get back to you on that."

McKeown tags out in script:

"Coulter never got back to us -- but for the record, like Iraq, Canada sent no troops to Vietnam."

Yeesh.

2. I don't get it about Ann Coulter. She might actually be good looking if you slapped on an extra 20 pounds. Will somebody please feed her?

That's so funny... I've said before that if I ever went on a date with Ann Coulter, I'd take her for a cheeseburger.

She made me cringe almost as much as that airhead who played "Christmas Jones" in Tomorrow Never Dies.

But she wasn't nearly as bad as the one in "A View To a Kill." (Tanya Roberts maybe?) All she did was scream "James, James!" for an hour and a half.

As I recall, Halle did not start to throw race around until after she had already won (in her embarrassing acceptance speech) so I don't think the charge of "mau-mauing her way to an Oscar" is fair.

Mau-Mauing, as Tom Wolfe originally defined it, was about the loud, cynical use of racial grievance to get what you want. If you want a real example of mau-mauing, look at Chris Rock's threats to "say something" on the live Oscar broadcast if Jamie Foxx doesn't win. That's mau-mauing.
