Curiously enough the word "calvary" does not appear in the New Testament, at least not in the original Greek text. Calvary is the English rendition of the Latin word (calvaria) used to translate the Greek translation (kraniou topos, "place of the skull") of the Hebrew word, Golgotha, the name given to the place where Jesus was crucified. Calvaria by itself means "skull."
