Boo birds -- Eagles fans have built a reputation through the years. A Philadelphia crowd once booed Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin as he was lying hurt and motionless on the field. Heck, Philly fans once even taunted Santa Claus.
But Terry Larimer, sports editor of the Allentown Morning Call, said the coarse reputation is not entirely deserved.
"They did boo Michael Irvin, but the story about the crowd booing Santa Claus is a bit off-kilter," said Larimer, who was the newspaper's Eagles beat writer for 12 years before taking his current job. "That Santa was a big drunk and he was making a fool of himself. So the crowd was booing the actions of that Santa in particular.
adding to the atmosphere was that the birds, needing a loss to secure the top draft pick (our resident redskin fan should empathize with this), were somehow managing to lead their opponent at the half.
I fully expect the usual idiots (like the one who thinks the rams won two superbowls) to continue propagating the story of how the philadelphia fans "threw bricks with rusty nails in them at the frail, pregnant crying female santa with a heart condition" or whatever suits their need at the time.
and yeah, SOME people were happy to see irvin get hurt - but if you watch the game (half these posts leave me wondering if FReepers even HAVE television), you'll notice that the bulk of the derision is directed at deion sanders (who did some faux-voodoo dance around the fallen irvin).
unlike half the idiots who post here, this idiot was actually AT the game. ;)
How many stories have they invented to cover-up the Santa debacle? The story I read was the Santa was a skinny 17 year old with a fake beard (how many Santa's have real beards). Phillys reputation is nastiness. Philadelphia is the American Irony City since the name is rooted in the Greek word for brotherly love.
