It is just not in Texas, it is everywhere. Wht is happening is our elected officials think they are royalty.

You are absolutely right. They tell us what to do and how much money they are going to take. Hard to say you truly own your own home knowing if you don't keep paying what they want you to pay you'll lose the place. Feels more like renting.
Everybody sees their property values go up and are happy, but they seem to forget that taxes/appraisals go up as well, and so they do nothing to fight it.
Many of my friends who are shooting for thirty years in the service are going to be in for a shock when they get out, and they might be left thinking they should have got out at twenty so they could get an earlier start on a second career.
The whole property tax situation across the US is just one huge mess, but nobody really wants to try and fix it, because most people only see a tiny part of the problem, or they may not even see a problem. I don't know, maybe they think "I live in a nice house so I should pay a little more than most other people" or "my house will be worth a lot when I sell it, so this is the price I have to pay".
