I recognize that it is in the interest of cheap labor types. But that interest is directly contrary to that of every blue collar, non-college educated American who competes with illegals underbidding the value of his labor.

You can't sell that politically in 2005 America.

This battle is going to have to take free-market Republicans, Democrats, and President Bush. It will pit them against the Buchananite statist Republicans.

You can't sell that politically in 2005 America.

It's a truth that stares every blue collar American straight in the face. That because he has to compete with illegals his standard of living (which did not substantially improve during the 90's) will not get better. He doesn't have to be "sold" on the fact that his lot is worse than his grandfather's. He can see that. Why do you think Bush only carried Ohio by 60K votes even in the face of a Democratic candidate who did not talk about economic populism ?
