But even THAT doesn;t make sense as rank and file Hispanic voters have indicated time and again that special treatment for illegal invaders is not a priority issue for them, and in many cases they oppose it entirely

What special treatment? They aren't going to get citizenship, just the privilage to pick vegetables or clean toilets, that native born Americans on welfare refuse to do.

Its OUR fualt if we permit people who can work on welfare not to do so.

As for the special treatment, WHO do you think will pay for their education, their medication, their hosiptal bills, etc????? Their employers??? Think again. YOU will, and so will I.

Further, creating a special underclass of exploited slave labor is hardly in the American tradition - at least recently anyway.

If we need more workers, raise the immigration quotas, but don't reward people who sneak across our borders with American jobs and free social services paid for by American tax-payers.

Bush is out of his head on this subject.

They're doing more than just picking veggies and cleaning toilets.

We can fix the part about Americans not being willing to work. End welfare. Thats about all it takes.

And a disproportionate number of them will commit violent crimes. 25% of American prison inmates are illegal aliens, in fact.

And of course we haven't addressed the issue of border security in a time of war -- tens of thousands of "special interest aliens" - aliens from Islamic nations with terrorist ties - have been apprehended at the borders since 9/11/01. Even if the apprehension rate is 30% (a very high estimate), the number of those that actually make it across is staggering.

Don't forget masonry, carpentry, plumbing, electrician, truck-driver, fast food worker, land-scaping. Some of them are even Freepers.

If American farmers paid a reasonable wage, then Americans will pick the vegetables. And if American hoteliers paid a reasonable wage, then Americans will clean the toilets. Even if the cost of vegetables and hotel rooms go up, its better than having MILLIONS of foreigners taking American jobs at every level, in every industry, which is what is happening now.

That's ridiculous. There is NO such thing as "jobs Americans refuse to do." It's just a matter of pay. Set the pay high enough and Americans will line up to do it.

I have great respect for your posts Dane, but I adamantly disagree with you on this issue.

Yesterday in the local newspaper was a dual ad (one in Spanish, one in English), guess which ad was on top of the other. This ad was for a textile industry (Goldtoe) in NC that was looking for fixers. Starting pay was $11.50 thru $15.75 (depending on experience). Insurance (w/dental), 401k, 500 bonus after 6 months, 500 more after 12 months, one week paid vacation (and you gain another year for each year you work for them, up to 6 weeks paid). Relocation pay included.

The reason they had to go out of state to recruit was because they were just raided and lost 4/5ths of their work force (illegals). They were durn near shut down.

I wish people would stop saying the jobs that illegals do is "pick vegetables or clean toilets". These textile jobs are great jobs that they (textile industries owners) would rather have illegals work because they easier to control (treat like dogs). They never have to give them pay raises, just fire them for any reason (don't have to give a reason) and hire another one the next day. Conveniently a paper cup throw away work force, that are so much more appealing to own/hire.

------------------------

In other local news yesterday, a local garbage man was killed by an hit and run illegal alien. The garbage truck driver held his adopted son as he died. Police are still searching for the hit and run driver (who worked at a local textile mill). Francisco Deigo Francisco will be coming to a town close to you soon, having killed once, he will not blink about doing it again.

That's a good argument for gutting welfare programs, not rewarding law-breaking border-jumpers.

If we could have federal and state laws denying all non-emergency social services to illegals -- and putting teeth by requiring a tight ID system for such services -- I wouldn't have much problem with folks coming here to do the kinds of jobs you describe. Unfortunately, though, they're also getting a lot of social services -- and I don't see Bush calling for a meaningful stop to that.

Their is this thing called capitalism. If you can't pay someone to do something you aren't paying enough. Americans will do any job on earth. I Have done many manual labor jobs but I have never worked for less than it would take to feed my family. You probably don't support welfare programs but they are a political reality. We will subsidize them. I personally don't donate money to businesses if you do fine. But don't tax me to do it.
