AARP has championed high taxes, Big Government and bureaucratic boondoggles since the first day it opened for business in the 1950s.

as noted by their stance on the privatization of social security...
And the RKBA.
I have suspected that AARP was created by Fabian socialists as a means of herding us into global socialism. I haven't seen anything from them to indicate otherwise.
The AARP was instrumental in helping defeat the Republicans during the '95 budget battle.
I will not join them, ever!
It is the most self-centered single-issue advocacy group out there. It could care less about what's best for the country and in that regard it is the same as any of the left-wing groups.
AARP is only out for one thing and that is one AARP. They are a big business out for profit yet they are clever enough to hide behind the title non-profit. Funny how that works!!
Now that I am over 50, I get their ads in the mail. I send the self addressed bulk stamped letter back empty. Can you still tape it to a brick and send it back through the mail?
Agree, AARP is an insurance company and travel company that hides behind its non-profit as an "old folks lobby." AARP says tax everyone and scares Grandma that she won't get free prescriptions unless she votes for Democrats.
I agree on your single-issue criticism. AARP also does classic demagoguery on that issue. They either seem unaware or uncaring of the probability that their stances and tactics will one day, almost inevitably, result in generational warfare where everyone loses. AARP is despicable. Like you, even though they've been after me for 9 years to join, I'll never do it. I love my kids too much. I know there are people who put bumper stickers on their motor homes which say, "I'm out spending my children's inheritance"; but that just isn't me.

The guy that runs AARP makes about $750K a year. Money you and I pay him! $68 million in government grants! Please!
AARP IS NOT A CHARITY! They are just another company abusing the non-profit corporation laws in America. As I have been saying here on FreeRepublic for years: The non-profit corporation laws must be reformed! There are over 850,000 non-profits in America and way way way too many are in business to enrich their handlers and/or push their own special political agendas!"
Why should something like PETA be a non-profit? Or the 100's of entities that push "green" political agendas. If Paul Newman and a bunch of people want to buy land and sit on it why should the American taxpayer subsidize it?
The group Newman is involved in, Nature Conservancy, Inc., had annual revenue of $761,698,221 in 2003. They have $3.7 billion dollars in assets. Assets that now in many circumstances get special tax treatment!
What about Judicial Watch? They spent over $75 million dollars the last few years. Have they won a case yet? And you can't tell me that outfit was not political. Yea, yea, some people here love them. But get real, it's just another way for lawyers to make money.
I can go on and on. How about Consumers Union? The people that publish Consumer Reports? $156,000,000 in revenue and about $200,000,000 in assets. And we subsidize all their mailing costs? Just like we do AARP! How about the Anti-Defamation League? $50 million in 2003 revenue and about $16 million in assets. Another political group!
The American taxpayer is being ripped off! These are not charities! They don't feed anyone or clothe anyone. They should be regular corporations and pay regular corporate taxes.
Oh, and by the way, you cannot join AARP unless you are 50+. What's up with that? They are descriminating against people like me that are under 50 years old! LOL! /sarcasm off
I get their ads in the mail, and they have somehow gotten my e-mail address as well, so that I receive a double dose of their drivel. They seem to have mastered the art of psychological warfare, and to engage in sophisticated scare tactics to get us "older" Americans (sarcasm on) to be afraid, to be very afraid, of being left out in the cold when our usefulness to society has come to an end.
The following may seem to be disgusting, but it expresses my attitude toward the AARP and any other "elder" organizations that claim to speak for ALL of us "old folks" and our civil rights, etc. Namely, I wish I could send them that nasty little fold-up card that the doctors give us "old folks," on which we are supposed to provide cross-sections of our latest bowel movement, when they want to do a cancer check.
They pick a group who has money and picks their pocket.
