Nuclear Submarine Runs Aground South of Guam

HONOLULU (AP) - A nuclear submarine ran aground about 350 miles south of Guam, injuring several sailors, one of them critically, the Navy said.

There were no reports of damage to the USS San Francisco's reactor plant, which was operating normally, the Navy said.

Jon Yoshishige, a spokesman for the U.S. Pacific Fleet based at Pearl Harbor, said the Friday afternoon incident is under investigation and the 360-foot submarine was headed back to its home port in Guam.

Details on the sailors' injuries were not immediately available. The sub has a crew of 137, officials said.

Military and Coast Guard aircraft from Guam were en route to monitor the submarine and assist if needed, the Navy said.

Guam is a U.S. territory about 3,700 miles southwest of Hawaii.

Chinese boats are getting more aggressive out there. It isnt out of the range of possibilities.

There is also underwater volcanic activity out there in that neck of the woods, if I remember correctly.

I wonder what sort of mission she was on? 137 is an awfully big crew. There are only 108 bunks onboard.

I was a sonarman....you do go active on the fathometer unless you are tracking....it is all on hardcopy....also, how do you think a sub navigates under ice?

I had the same reaction as you two when I first saw that repsonse, but then I got to thinking (always a dangerous thing) that no one could be that dense as to refer to a novel when discussing a technical subject with obvious experts.

Well, Dirk Pitt once said....

It was in 1991. I was TAD there for the Med run while Batfish was in the yards.

Sounds like weekly ops, if they just returned from WESTPAC on Dec 10.

We always hot-racked on weeklies. They were probably in hot racking heaven with that amount of crew

For a deployment, yep. They'll put 18-24 racks down there for the nubs to sleep in.

I am sub qualified and a sub veteran. I was a crew member on a boat involver in a grounding incident. The CO during the incident was NOT relieved. However, that is all I can say in an open forum. Actually, that is all I can say in any forum.

Your comment was a sincere response to try and direct the original poster to some factual information. My point was that the motives of anyone refering to a novel as a basis for debate should be suspect.

I was never in the PAC, so I don't know if they have a PAC equivalent of AUTEC where boats go to do TRE.

I still miss the guys...and its been a few years

I know how you feel there, expecally with being back here in Groton, with my wife on shore duty. I keep looking at all the sources to see if my old boats are having a reunion.
I did get one concelation..the Cheif who live across the street from us was a "C" school student of mine back in 89 *L*

Cool picture on your home page. I'm curious, how are subs climate controlled?
