WASHINGTON The Bush administration paid a prominent commentator to promote the No Child Left Behind (search) schools law to fellow blacks and to give the education secretary media time, records show.
A company run by Armstrong Williams (search), the syndicated commentator, was paid $240,000 by the Education Department. The goal was to deliver positive messages about Bush's education overhaul, using Williams' broad reach with minorities.

He ran a clip of Williams saying it may have been "ethically questionable" and he wouldn't do it again, then Cameron noted about 30 democrats on Capitol Hill are on this.
Ya right... like Hitlery didn't have her MSM buddies tout her misguided medical plan.
Good. Since all ofthe left-wing fascist media is against the law someone should be for it.
I hope now we can get the Democrats agreement to delete the Dept of Ed.
A mountain being made out of a molehill in my opinion but it will be hyped to overshadow what Hillary knew about what was going on at her own fundraiser.
Note that the standard is going to be that since Bush is tangentially involved in the story, he's ultimately responsible.
I say that HRC was responsible for her own fundraiser more intimately.
So what?
Isn't there some FR rule against using the words HRC and intimately in the same sentence? If there isn't, there should be. Uggh, what an image.
That was my reaction, but Carl was quite breathless. Almost Rita like.
That was my reaction, too.
This ought to be illegal, and is certainly illegal. When the government touts the law, you don't have government "of the people, by the people, for the people," you have government of the government, by the government, for the government. It's a conflict of interest.
How long has there been this list. Who thought it up? Who implemented this policy?
Who else got money? USA TODAY seems amazingly tunnel-visioned on this.
Finally, how much money does the NEA fork over in order to get their policies touted in the media.
I don't even think of Williams as a "journalist". He's a commentator with an established political viewpoint.
I'd like to learn more about said list and what its title is and that kind of thing. I would not be surprised to see a mischaracterization going on.
Also, the money was a contract with Williams firm, the Graham Williams Group, to produce ads.
Bull. The government pays for all kinds of policy promotions.
Fox roundtable discussing now.
Fred says Armstrong is not a journalist like they are. Fred saying he probably shouldn't have done this and that taxpayer money shouldn't be spent this way but this is no big deal.
Brian Wilson set up the story as saying "all of Washington is buzzing" about this.
Oh brother.
Juan says that Armtrong is a friend so he is pained to say how wrong this was.
Has the panel even mentioned the fundraiser indictment?
It has not been mentioned at all during this program that I heard (I may have missed it, though).
I did hear Kiran Chetry do the news at the top of the hour right before it started and it was story #2 then.
Or who is going to come up with techniques to make kids want to quit school or teach kids anything but essential information.
I wish someone in Washington would read the constitution for a change.
