You're missing their main motivation in the first place. I'm talking about the Muslims' core issue -- which is the legitimacy of their religion.
What drives them to taken over territory (or regaining back any territory they've ever had in "history" because it's sacred), what drives them to want to destroy the Jews and the state of Israel, what drives them to want to drive everyone off the Temple Mount (where the Dome of the Rock is), what drives them to irrational acts (the way we see it) of cutting off heads, abusing their women, tolerating dictatorships for their people in place of freedom and democracy, what drives them on all this to the utter deprivation of their people and their own lives, along with their own children's live (as so-called "suicide bombers") -- what drives them in all this has nothing to do with money, freedom, suffering of their people, suffering of their own families, wanting a better life -- or any of the standard things that people think motivate others in general.
Purely, totally and ultimately -- the only thing which drives them, is the legitimacy of their religion and making Islam (supposedly) paramount to all other religions -- that Islam, which is destined to take over the entire world (killing all the Jews and Christians in the process).
Thus, what one can do to totally destroy Islam to all its current adherents and make the Imams and clerics totally powerless to affect or influence the "captive people" of Islam -- is to totally destroy all Islam's outward and "self-perceived" important (and critical) symbols.
That core symbol is in Mecca. Destroy that symbol and you destroy the religion of Islam forever. It will totally disintegrate. That's the bottom line.

But there is still the moon --- I hope we don't have to blow it up --- but the moon is what they worship for the entire month of November and isn't that meterorite they bow to important because they think it came from the moon? The Arab moon god.
