Does that surprise you? It doesn't surprise me. If you are attuned to the earth (which a lot of people were before the invention of TV and other things to distract the mind) you would probably feel the build up that led to the earthquake.
Before the last California quake, my dog acted really strange. If you watch the animals you can foretell a lot of things.

Here's the link to the site of the retired US Geological Service expert who incorporates unusual pet activity with his quake predictions. This is NOT the only data he uses, just one factor. He accurately and publicly predicted the World Series quake - and was told by the USGS not to publicly "predict" quakes anymore. He's more accurate than the current active USGS people. Since he's retired now, he can do what the hell he wants and speak his mind.
