The 6 miles out part doesn't matter as the source of the laser likely wasn't 6 miles out. 3000 feet is the operative stat

Obviously you have some inside information that tells you the 3k feet is the operative stat and not the 6 miles out? How do you know that?

Besides, if your friend built a laser that could be visible at a quarter mile, that's only about 1300 feet, not 3000.

The 6 miles out is the reported distance that the plane was from the airport.

The laser I mentioned was built 10+ years ago and it was pretty compact I might add. Fit in a shoe box.

Not true. That quarter-mile visibility is to the target and back again or a half-mile which would be 2600 feet. And that's dependent on the reflectivity of the target. Seeing it at the other end when it's pointed at you would be easier much farther out -- say to 3000 feet and beyond.
