Earlier today, responding to these remarks by the UN's Jan Egeland
But U.N. Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Jan Egeland suggested that the United States and other Western nations were being "stingy" with relief funds, saying there would be more available if taxes were raised.
"It is beyond me why are we so stingy, really," the Norwegian-born U.N. official told reporters. "Christmastime should remind many Western countries at least, [of] how rich we have become."
"There are several donors who are less generous than before in a growing world economy," he said, adding that politicians in the United States and Europe "believe that they are really burdening the taxpayers too much, and the taxpayers want to give less. It's not true. They want to give more."
I sent this email to Jan Egeland
You seem to be under the impression that the ONLY way that individuals can donate money to charities and disasters is if the government TAKES the money from them in the form of taxes and gives it to YOU.
Leaving aside the fact that the UN is the last place I want MY government to give money (see Oil for Food scandal), we don't need to be taxed into giving. The United States is a generous country and we WILL give a lot of money to this cause; we're just not going to give it to YOU to spend as you see fit.
The people who really need and deserve the money will get it, without you having the opportunity to cut your slice off of it.

P.S. Forget about a UN and/or world tax; it's not going to happen.
Great job, Howlin
'Bout time someone told them off. And you are just the lady to do it. ;-)
All I did was finally get mad enough to write a nasty email.
It wasn't that hard; in fact, it felt GOOD.
He was NOT misquoted; he's just trying to CYA now.
Good job!..His comments were WAY over the top..Our taxes are not his business and our generosity is great...I am certain his statement angered many Americans..
You are my hero.
I just read today that Volker has told some radio show that the UN sat by and watched as Saddam mad all that money SMUGGLING.
Actually, I saw something on Fox a few weeks ago that showed the "International Red Cross" as just another anti-American group of socialist idiots looking to bring us down (see Amnesty International). And since the tsunami hit, we are giving these ba*tards $15 mil.
Dollars to doughnuts they won't be using it to help out the victims! I am sure the money will be used against us in some way.
Your tax dollars at work...
They would be richer and more prosperous--and would have more largesse to give away--if their taxes were lowered.
Socialism has failed every time and everywhere it has been tried.
Many people didn't have to try it to know that it would fail.
You go, Girl!
You go, howlin-girl! Give 'em hell!!
My money for the disaster in Asia will go to church-related groups.
There was some discussion earlier today about exactly which organization to give money to.
I believe World Vision was one, can that be right?
Can you suggest some?
Great thread!
If the United States wants to aid (within reason) the victims of natural disasters, okay by me. But if my tax dollars come within a hundred miles of the corrupt, filthy fingers of the creeps at the scumbag United Nations, then I will have a real problem. I shall be keeping a careful eye on my Congressman and Senators.
Nice Job!! You do us proud!!
"You may call us "stingy," but we call you and the UN "wasteful".........and downright corrupt."
In a nutshell!!! ^5, Howlin, you go girl!

Here's what I wrote them.
I write to tell you that your statement about the USA being "stingy" with it's mere $15,000,000 contribution is disgusting. I noticed that you have not disclosed your country's contribution, nor have you for even a second commented about how much relief was sought. It is my recommendation that you contact some of your cronies at the UN and ask that they donate some of the "BILLIONS" that they bilked from the Oil For Food program. Somehow, folks like you have the audacity to take cheap shots at the USA at every opportunity, when, in fact, the USA is by and large the MOST charitable nation on earth.
I would also recommend Samaritan's Purse, run by Franklin Graham.
I had the distinct impression that old Jan thought our taxes should be higher so he could blackmail more of our money out of the government.
You know they want a "UN tax."
I had to rewind my Tivo twice during Special report. I just couldn't believe that Juan Williams was making sense about this issue while Ceci Connolly appeared to be giving the UN a Lewinsky right on the air!
I saw this same UN slug on Fox today. Talk about doing a CYA gavotte. Of course Fox threw him marshmellows.
