So...is it Maher or Sontag who will ultimately be remembered for that quote? I remember when Maher said it. Didn't know about Sontag.
Maher may have lost his show "Politically Incorrect" (in part, at least) because of his comment. Sontag, as a known radical nincompoop who few took seriously, would have been shrugged off for her sentiments but Maher expressed himself on his own prime-time show.
