Fears for children as North Korea slashes rations
January 26, 2005

London: North Korea has slashed daily food rations for its people, fuelling concerns for the health of the country's children who are showing signs of stunted growth from a lack of proper nourishment.

World Food Programme (WFP) monitors in the reclusive hardline communist state said the government handouts had been cut from 300g of cereals a day to 250g. That was exactly half of the minimum daily required cereal ration of about 500g.

Britain freezes assets of Syrian terrorist finance suspect

www.chinaview.cn 2005-01-27 01:04:46

LONDON, Jan. 26 (Xinhuanet) -- British Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown has ordered a freeze on the assets of a Syrian suspected of supporting the al-Qaeda terrorist network in Iraq, the Treasury said Wednesday.

The Chancellor "instructed the Bank of England to direct financial institutions to take immediate action to freeze funds belonging to Sulayman Darwish," the Treasury said in a statement.

The action was taken after the US government froze the assets of Darwish on Tuesday

"Suspect in White House Standoff to Stay in Jail "
Updated: Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005 - 4:32 PM

WASHINGTON (AP) -

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The Michigan man who threatened to blow up his van near the White House last week has been held without bond until trial.

During an appearance in U.S. District Court Tuesday, Magistrate Judge Deborah Robinson said it was necessary to keep 54-year-old Lowell Timmers of Cedar Springs, Michigan behind bars to assure his next appearance in court. She also cited public safety in her ruling.

Timmers listened intently to the charges against him. Prosecutors and police witnesses say they found six jars and two tins of gasoline in his van, plus components of a device to blow up the liquid, but it wasn't hooked up.

Tony Axam, Timmers' public defender, argued that he was a Marine veteran with no criminal record and has lived a quiet life."

No Comment from Bin Laden on Tsunami Disaster
By Patrick Goodenough
CNSNews.com International Editor
January 26, 2005

(CNSNews.com) - One month after tsunamis killed more than 220,000 Muslims in Indonesia's Aceh province alone -- and tens of thousands of other people in India and elsewhere -- the devastated countries of South Asia have yet to hear messages of condolence from Osama bin Laden or any other al-Qaeda-linked terrorist leaders.

The Saudi millionaire and his Iraq-based ally Abu Musab al-Zarqawi have issued public statements since the disaster, but they have focused on the Jan. 30 elections in Iraq, warning that any Muslims taking part were "infidels."

Asia, the United States, Australia and Japan - all members of the "coalition of the willing" in Iraq who are reviled by Islamists - are spearheading the humanitarian efforts in Indonesia and other tsunami-hit countries. They have also made the largest financial pledges.

Operation Unified Assistance, the U.S. tsunami relief mission launched six days after the Dec 26 disaster, is the biggest operation of its kind in U.S. military history.

snip

"The fastest, biggest aid providers to the staunchly Muslim victims of Aceh, Indonesia, were the Australian and U.S. military," Thailand's Bangkok Post noted on Tuesday.

"The regional arms of al-Qaeda spared not even a message of condolence for those who suffered in their own countries, let alone abroad."

Recalling that bin Laden had issued a statement on the Iraqi election a day after the tsunami occurred, the newspaper said that even as shocked countries began to rush in aid, "the man who has called for the proclamation of a new caliphate said nothing about the plight of millions of distressed Muslims."

The Bangkok Post expressed the hope that the "heartless lack of response," contrasted with Western generosity, would refute anti-Western propaganda and expose terrorists' true values.

On an Internet website once belonging to the bin Laden business empire, an American technology consultant who now controls the site has posted a message:

"Where is your support for your Muslim brothers now?" Christopher Curry asks.

"It is interesting to hear Osama's attack on the Western world, yet America, Australia and Europe, the people he calls 'infidels' are the ones supporting Indonesia, India and thousands of Muslim people in their tragedy."

Curry says on the webpage that he used special software to acquire the bin Laden domain name the second it expired - on September 11, 2001.

Not terror related but happy to see this...

One month on tsunami zone escapes health disaster

2005/1/25
By Emma Ross JAKARTA, Indonesia, AP

The danger that disease and injuries might double the death toll from Asia's tsunami catastrophe has now passed, health experts say, thanks to the world's rapid response _ and to a measure of luck.

The risk of life-threatening epidemics is still real and serious, and experts warn authorities must not let down their guard. But nearly a month after the Dec. 26 disaster, Dr. Mike Ryan, the World Health Organization's top outbreak specialist, said he's optimistic the agency's early predictions that as many as 150,000 could die from injuries and infectious disease will not materialize.

Maybe a Muslim will be curious enough to

"ASK THE SCHOLAR"
http://www.islamonline.net/fatwaapplication/english/browse.asp

as to why UBL has no apparent compassion for his fellow muslims
in their time of great need and suffering in regards to the tsunami
disaster.

Even if the scholar can't speak for UBL; maybe he can explain this
odd situation.

N. Korea is indeed a disaster, and needs our attention.

Both Iran and N. Korea have nuclear started.

I would think that we will have to deal with Iran and Syria next, they are killing our military today, every day.

They are the source of supplies to the terrorists in Iraq.

This next war will be a long and large one, there is no
stopping it and the enemies are so mixed that it is difficult to determine who they are.

Kerry let the communists out of the closet, the nazi's have now came out and all support the muslim terrorists.

I no longer would bet on who started it, as all I do is chase facts around in a circle.

We had the photos of the muslims in the protests and at the bus from Israel, acting, dressed and chanting, as they do in Palestine, only a week ago. There were several threads on them.

I have heard the voices of arabs, promise that the day President Bush dies, they will dance in the streets of America, in joy.

We have beheading, burned bodies dropped off at churches and the murdered family in New Jersey.

I would say that the muslim terrorist is very active in America today.

Of course these are my opinions/observations.

Be safe.

Well now, they don't have to defend themselves or defend UBL; but maybe they can take a moment to give their opinion as to why they think UBL is so cold and devoid of lack of support for the tsunami victims.

Passengers Help Detain Unruly Traveler (Philadelphia to Palm Beach Flight - 1/26/05)

January 26, 2005 — Sheriff's deputies in Palm Beach County, Florida, say airplane passengers helped detain an unruly traveler on a flight from Philadelphia before the plane landed there.

A sheriff's spokesman sasy a flight attendant asked 37-year-old Christopher Egyed of Philadelphia to quiet down because he was disturbing other passengers. The spokesman says the man later made threats and headed toward the pilot's cabin, and after a flight attendant attempted to stop him in the aisle, a group of passengers jumped in and helped to restrain him.

Sheriff's deputies took him into custody after the plane landed at Palm Beach International Airport last night. The F-B-I later arrested him on a federal charge of interfering with the operation of a flight crew.

No one was hurt during the incident.

Darn great post granny! In the past I used to worry a lot but not recently. If I had to bet, danger is closer and more lethal than ever but what will be will be. Righteousness is truth and truth is eternal.

Cindy....just a bit of an update....but I had to search for this info....it seems that this story has fallen off the radar.

Refinery Fire Controlled

Jan 25, 2005 11:28 pm US/Eastern PHILADELPHIA (KYW) Fire crews are on the scene of a two-alarm fire at the Sunoco refinery in South Philadelphia.

CBS 3’s Tamsen Fadal reports it took firefighters nearly two hours to control the blaze as black smoke filled the air throughout the area.

According to fire officials, the fire broke out in the refinery’s exchanger unit that is used in the process of making gasoline.

About 75 firefighters arrived to battle the fire that began shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday. An explosion was reportedly heard just moments before the fire broke out.

Although no injuries were reported, Fadal has learned firefighters will continue to maintain control of the flames throughout the night as they plan to simply let the product burn itself out.
