Honduras is in the grips of crime gangs - some crime gangs have tens of thousands of members - this gang was sending a message against a law and order candidate.

"The Mara Salvatrucha gang and another, Mara 18, claim to have more than 100,000 members in Honduras. The gangs are known for extorting “protection” money from residents as well as committing robberies, homicides and other crimes."

It's strange going into a store a seeing a guard with his finger on the trigger of a shotgun looking back at you but we felt safe where we were. I know the north is dangerous and I was nervous until we got out of Tegucigalpa (of course, once you survive the landing in Tegucigalpa you don't worry about the rest of the trip.) I look forward to going back next year.
